James Whistler (1834-1903) was an American Painter and etcher. His lawsuit against Ruskin was an example of his efforts to publicize his art. He was influenced by Velasquez and Japanese print artists. Among his best known paintings are Old Battersea Bridge, Portrait of My Mother, The Artist's Studio, and Portrait of Thomas Carlyle. This painting, titled Nocturne Blue and Silver, was painted about 1866 at Westminster, looking toward Lambeth. On the back of the picture is a card bearing the artist's signature and the butterfly, with the title 'Westminster, Blue and Silver, by J. M'Neill Whistler, 2 Lindsay House, Old Chelsea.'.

Stacks of Wheat (Sunset, Snow Effect) 1891 France. The monumental stacks that Claude Monet depicted in his series Stacks of Wheat rose fifteen to twenty feet and stood just outside the artistís farmhouse at Giverny. Through 1890 and 1891, he worked on this series both in the field, painting simultaneously at several easels, and in the studio, refining pictorial harmonies. In May 1891, Monet hung fifteen of these canvases next to each other in one small room in the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris. An unprecedented critical and financial success, the exhibition marked a breakthrough in Monetís career, as well as in the history of French art. In this view, and in nearly all of the autumn views in the series, the conical tops of the stacks break the horizon and push into the sky. But in most of the winter views, which constitute the core of the series, the stacks seem wrapped by bands of hill and field, as if bedded down for the season. For Monet, the stack was a resonant symbol of sustenance

Stowing Sail 1903 United States. Homer created sparkling watercolor sketches of sailboats in Bahamian waters during his 1898-99 Bahamas trip. When he visited Key West, Florida, in the winter of 1903-04, he further indulged his interest in the details of local boating. There, Homer painted Stowing Sail on December 22, 1903. Everything about this watercolor points toward rapid, plein-air execution.The artistís graphite underdrawing is a quick and sketchy series of lines that establish the major contours on the sheet. Pentiments, or shifts, in the underdrawing show that when he began the sketch, the figure was leaning further forward, gathering the sail over the back of the boat. This adjustment suggests that Homer was working quickly to keep up with the manís progress.Homer applied all of his washes directly within the forms marked in the underdrawing, working wet-on-wet, as if there were not enough time to wait for one to dry before adding the next. The caption for this image by NC Wyeth that accompanies the tale of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe reads: ' And thus I every now and then took a little voyage upon the sea. Robinson Crusoe is a novel written by the English novelist Daniel Defoe and published in 1719. The Outlook, Maine Coast 1894 United States. The Outlook, Maine Coast depicts two young women bracing themselves against the wind on a high overlook at Proutís Neck, Maine. Rather than focusing on what the women are watching, Homer chose to explore the act of looking. Homer, a keen and thoughtful observer himself, was fascinated with the experience of watching. In this watercolor, he associated visual observation with physical sensations the feeling of strong breezes, moisture in the air, and the chill of an overcast day. Because it allowed Homer to work outdoors quickly, watercolor was the perfect medium to make these atmospheric effects tangible and immediate.
