In the first part of the series, Goya critiques the characters, institutions, and values of early modern Spanish society; the second focuses on bizarre and macabre imagery. The most famous image, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (El sueño de la razon produce monstruos), conveys a purposeful ambiguity regarding the conflict between Spanish religiosity and Enlightenment thought: sueño may refer both to the sleep or absence of reason, and to the dream of reason (reason unchecked) that produces monsters. Saint Jerome in Penitence 1644 Holland. Ferdinand Bol studied with Rembrandt van Rijn in Amsterdam, where he set up his own shop around 1642. Two years later, he produced this atmospheric etching of Saint Jerome, which is particularly reminiscent of the master in its shadows and arched top. Although his early works were long mistaken for Rembrandtís, Bol signed this print at the bottom right. He would eventually trade the dark palette and historical figure studies of the older artist for a lighter tonality and more elite clientele, which would make him one of the most financially successful Dutch painters of his era.. Alberti worked on the restoration in the 15th century. These photographs date from March, 1984. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

The Rich Man and Lazarus (The Parables of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ) 1864 After Sir John Everett Millais British It took Millais seven years to design twenty images inspired by New Testament Parables for the Dalziel Brothers, and the resulting prints are considered pinnacles of wood engraved illustration. The artist wrote to his publishers, "I can do ordinary drawings as quickly as most men, but these designs can scarcely be regarded in the same lighteach Parable I illustrate perhaps a dozen times before I fix [the image." After completing a design, Millais transferred it to a woodblock coated with Chinese white for skilled engravers to carve. Finally, he reviewed proofs and final adjustments were made before the final printing.The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke:16:19-31) contrasts the earthly fortunes of a wealthy, thoughtless man and poor beggar outside, desperately hungry with sores on his legs licked by dogs-in the afterlife, their positions will be reversed.
