This illustration, dating to 1898, shows the ancient Greek/Roman deities Cronus and Rhea. According to Greek and Roman mythology, after the Titan Rhea gave birth to Zeus, she hid him from her husband Cronus (also Kronos and had some Curetes, a mythical people, clash their shields to drown out any sign of the baby Zeus' cries. To deceive Cronus, who wanted the new baby ( an omen had told Cronus that his child would defeathim - to preven this cronus had swallowed all of Rhea's children thus far), Rhea gave Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, as seen here.

Between 1518 and 1519, the Italian master painter Raphael painted 'The Construction of the Temple' (pictured in this line drawing), Solomon's temple in Jerusalem for what is known as the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. According to the hebrew Bible, Solomon was a king of Israel, son of David. His temple on Mount Moriah housed the Ark of the Covenant.

The figure is from the engraving on the Ficorini Cista that was found at Praeneste, south of Rome, in 1738. It is Roman and dates to about 250 B.C. The design on the Ficorini cista is the sojourn of the Argonauts among the Bebryces. One of the youths is practicing boxing on a leather sack stuffed with sand that hangs from a tree. This exercise was one of the recognized ones in the gymnasium. and continues to be popular with boxers. The book dates to 1895.

Tray late 17th century or later probably French, Nevers Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. Jupiter, also known as Jove, is the god of sky and thunder, as well as the king of gods in Ancient Roman Mythology. Jupiter is the top god of the Roman pantheon. Jupiter was considered the chief deity of Roman state religion during the Republican and Imperial eras until Christianity became the dominant religion. Here on his throne on Mount Olympus, he has his eagle with him. The eagle served as Jupiters personal messenger. Myths said an eagle have carried the youth Ganymede to Olympus, where he served as the gods' cupbearer. Jupiter was known to the Greeks as Zeus.

Hercules is the Roman equivalent of the Greek divine hero Heracles, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his strength and for his numerous far-ranging adventures. He is most famous for a cycle of twelve labors he did while serving his cousin Eurystheus. Antaeus, known to the Berbers as Anti, was a figure in Berber and Greek mythology. He was famed for his defeat by Heracles as part of the Labours of Hercules. Whenever Antaeus touched the Earth (his mother), his strength was renewed, so that even if thrown to the ground, he was invincible. Heracles, in combat with him (seen here in this 1915 illustration), discovered the source of his strength and, lifting him up from Earth, crushed him to death.

When besieged by suitors during Ulysses long absence, she promised them a decision when her piece of work was complete. She wove all day, and sat up with her ladies overnight undoing her labours.
