Tapestry depicting British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (on a white horse) at the Battle of Oudenarde, fought in July 1708 at Oudenaarde in Flanders, during the the War of the Spanish Succession. The Festival of Psyche, with Mercury from a set of Mythological Subjects after Giulio Romano designed 1684-86, woven 1689-92 Designed after drawings attributed to Giulio Romano Italian In a gently wooded landscape, mythological figures gather. Together with the contiguous scene in the tapestry the Festival of Psyche with Bacchus (53.225.9), the composition broadens to include a glorious credenza display of gilded plate with precious textiles, in a scene traditionally identified as depicting preparations for the wedding feast of Cupid and Psyche.This tapestry is from a set of eight, traditionally called Les Sujets de la Fable. The designs for all eight tapestries are based in part upon drawings then in Louis XIV's collection- now preserved in the Louvre- which were all, at that time, attributed to Giulio Romano. Up to the white-clothed harlequin in back view, all figures in fashionable-elegant courtyard clothing are shown. He watches as the widowed Greek queen, Artemisia, in the central boat, directs the capture of the city. The principle that a queen as well as a king could not only protect a kingdom but also initiate military actions was a concept that was useful to reinforce the personal power of several regent queens of France during the 16th and 17th centuries.
