La Marchande de moutarde 1858 James McNeill Whistler American After visiting Cologne during a summer-fall tour in 1858, Whistler created this image of an elderly mustard vendor who arranges jars within a dim interior, as a young assistant leans against the door jamb. He here establishes a formula to which he would often returnusing an open entrance to frame a receding interior containing figures and objects that refer to a particular activity and locale. One of the most complex prints in "Douze eaux-fortes d’après nature" (Twelve Etchings from Nature), Whistler based the composition on drawings and sent an impression to the Paris Salon of 1859.. The Infant Moses 1863-81 After Simeon Solomon British This wood engraving is based on an oil titled "Moses" that Solomon exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1860 (now Delaware Art Museum), when he was only nineteen. Part of the second generation of Pre-Raphaelites, and from a Jewish family, the artist's early subjects were inspired by the Hebrew Bible, and strove for ethnic and archaeological accuracy. The harp and pottery vessel hanging by the window, for example, derive from Assyrian carvings at the British Museum, and the features of both mother and sister were based on those of a relative, Fanny Cohen.
