This 1912 image shows Cleopatra on a barge on the Nile River. Cleopatra VII (69-30 B.C.), the daughter of Ptolemy XI, of Egypt. She married her brother Ptolemy XII and began to rule Egypt with him when she was 17. She later aligned her self with Julius Caesar against her brother. Following Caesar's death, she aligned herself with Mark Antony. Following Antony's death, she is said to have killed herself, as legend has it, by the bite of an asp.

The ocean coast had its dangers as well as its attractions. Shipwreck was a pervasive fear in the nineteenth century. Maritime disasters like the loss of this steamship off the coat of Newfoundland were regularly reported in the newspapers and magazines. Homers image, at once pathetic and erotic, of “one of the many painful incidents of the days following the breaking up of the wreck” is based not only on actual reports of the Atlantic tragedy, but also, it has been suggested, on an earlier literary source, Henry Wadsworth Longfellows The Wreck of the Hesperus (1839). An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon together With somewhat Concerning Severall Remarkable passages of my life that hath hapned sic since my Deliverance out of Captivity' is a book written by the English trader and sailor Robert Knox in 1681. It describes his experiences some years earlier on the South Asian island now best known as Sri Lanka and provides one of the most important contemporary accounts of 17th century Ceylonese life. Knox spent 19 years on Ceylon after being taken prisoner by King Rajasimha II.

Every Saturday Arthur B. Davies (American, 1862-1928). Every Saturday, ca. 1895-1896. Oil on canvas, 18 x 29 15/16 in. (45.7 x 76 cm). This lyrical vision of three women walking in a rural landscape has a quaint, almost nostalgic mood. The title, Every Saturday, implies that the three traversed this path beside the duck pond with regularity, yet we are left to speculate about their purpose or destination. An early work by Arthur Davies, the painting testifies to his poetic and individual aesthetic, which reflected his admiration for the art of Albert Pinkham Ryder and prompted his patron, the famous collector Duncan Phillips, to describe him as "a painter of dreams" and an "enchanter."
