The latter opened in 1789 with thirty-four paintings and contained about one hundred and seventy works by the time Boydell went bankrupt and auctioned the contents in 1805-his print sales had plummeted when Napoleon blocaded European ports. This impression comes from an American reissue of 1852 spearheaded by Shearjashub Spooner, a New York dental surgeon, writer and art scholar who acquired Boydell's heavily worn plates and had them reworked. This version on newprint comes from a periodical where he stories were issued first in serial form. This print came to the Museum inserted in an album of caricatures clipped from contemporary periodicals, assembled around 1873 by the artist and etcher Arthur Heseltine. Born in England, Heseltine lived for a time in Bourron-Marlotte, near the forest of Fountainebleau in France, and later in Glasgow. The Rest (Le Repos) 1771 Jean-Baptiste Le Prince French This dark interior demonstrates Jean-Baptiste Le Princes skill at wielding aquatint, a tonal intaglio print technique for which he developed a unique method in 1768. The effect of dramatic chiaroscuro is reminiscent of Rembrandts prints, which Le Prince greatly admired. The two figures on the left and various ropes and fishnets hanging from the beams dissolve into the saturated depths of the room. Off-set against this dark background, a sleeping woman, the object of the old mans and elderly womans attention is clearly displayed for the viewers appreciation. Le Prince emphasizes the erotic appeal of the sleeping young beauty. The girls clothing has become disheveled in her slumber, exposing her shoulders and chest. Golden light caresses her smooth, exposed skin. The broken eggs in the bottom left, a familiar motif in eighteenth-century genre scenes, suggest the loss of the young womans virtue. Christ and the Virgin Appearing to Saint Francis 1562-1602 Pietro Faccini Italian Faccini's intensely expressive style, rooted in the study of Correggio, Barocci, and the Carracci, is exemplified by this remarkable drawing, in which the saint's convulsed body and agitated drapery seem less a convincing anatomical construction than the outward expression of a turbulent spiritual state. This accomplished design relates to a small painting on panel (oil on panel, 48 x 33 cm, Musée du Louvre inv. 266, Paris, formerly in the Jabach collection), albeit with small variations. Faccini's brief career began when he took up painting at the age of thirty. After four years of study in the Carracci Academy in Bologna, he left around 1594 to set up a rival school. Inspired by a series of ground-breaking Hamlet lithographs that Delacroix had created one year earlier, the younger artist opted for the more linear technique of etching. His expressive conception of form had been learned in Ingres's studio then developed under Delacroix. In the series, key exchanges offer a compressed summary of much of the play, with a final cluster devoted to the tragic conclusion.
