Representatives from the Shuttle program and contractor team were on hand to discuss the Columbia Accident Investigation Board report and where KSC stands in its progress toward return to flight.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- In the Rocket Garden at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, United States Postal Service official Steve Massey addresses the audience during an event unveiling two new stamps that commemorate the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight from the United States Postal Service.One stamp commemorates NASA's Project Mercury and Alan Shepard's historic launch on May 5, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Freedom 7. The second stamp honors NASA's MESSENGER, which reached Mercury in March to become the first spacecraft to orbit the planet. The two missions frame a remarkable 50-year period in which America advanced space exploration through more than 1,500 crewed and uncrewed flights.

Augustine, chair of the Review of U.S. Human Space Flight Plans Committee, co-hosts the official opening of the Conference on the American Space Program for the 21st Century following President Barack Obama's remarks describing the new course his administration is charting for NASA and the future of U.S. leadership in human spaceflight. The four break-out conference sessions that will take place in the Operations and Checkout Building and in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will include these topics Increasing Access to and Utilization of the International Space Station; Jumpstarting the New Technologies to Take Us Beyond; Expanding our Reach into the Solar System and Harnessing Space to Expand Economic Opportunity.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - KSC Deputy Director James W. Kennedy addresses a group of KSC employees assembled in the KSC Training Auditorium, as KSC Director Roy D. Bridges looks on (right). The occasion is the announcement of Kennedy as the next director of the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Kennedy has served as KSC's deputy director since November 2002. He will succeed Bridges, who was appointed on June 13 to lead NASA's Langley Research Center, Hampton, Va.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- In the Training Auditorium at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Professor Sam Ting talks to employees about the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS). Ting is the particle physics detector's principal investigator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.AMS is designed to operate as an external module on the International Space Station. It will use the unique environment of space to study the universe and its origin by searching for dark matter. AMS-2 will fly to the station aboard space shuttle Endeavour's STS-134 mission targeted to launch Feb. 27, 2011.

During a Moon to Mars event March 11, 2019, in the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building high bay at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine speaks to astronaut Karen Nyberg, on screen. Nyberg is in a test version of the Orion crew module at the agencys Johnson Space Center in Houston. Bridenstine spoke to NASA workers across the nation and members of the news media, following the delivery of President Trumps fiscal year 2020 budget proposal to U.S. Congress, which includes funding for the agencys Moon to Mars initiative and Gateway lunar outpost. Bridenstine presented a closer look at Americas work to return astronauts to the Moon in a sustainable way and continue exploration to Mars.

UAP Media Briefing. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is seen during a media briefing to discuss the findings from an unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) independent study team, Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023, at the Mary W. Jackson NASA Headquarters building in Washington. The UAP independent study team, commissioned in 2022, is a counsel of 16 community experts across diverse areas on matters relevant to potential methods of study for unidentified anomalous phenomena. NASA published the teams full report online, which aims to inform about what possible data could be collected in the future to shed light on the nature and origin of UAP.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Director of the center's Constellation Project Office Pepper Phillips talks to workers at the Launch Equipment Test Facility (LETF), which recently underwent a $35 million comprehensive upgrade that lasted four years. The LETF was established in the 1970s to support the qualification of the Space Shuttle Programs umbilical and T-0 mechanisms. Throughout the years, it has supported the development of systems for shuttle and the International Space Station, Delta and Atlas rockets, and various research and development programs. The LETF has unique capabilities to evolve into a versatile test and development area that supports a wide spectrum of programs.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Center Director Robert Cabana, left, and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden participate a ceremony renaming the refurbished Operations and Checkout Building for Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon. The building's high bay is being used to support the agency's new Orion spacecraft and is the same spaceport facility where the Apollo 11 command/service module and lunar module were prepped for the first lunar landing mission in 1969. Orion is designed to take humans farther than theyve ever gone before, serving as the exploration vehicle that will carry astronauts to deep space and sustain the crew during travel to destinations such as an asteroid or Mars.The ceremony was part of NASA's 45th anniversary celebration of the Apollo 11 moon landing. As the world watched, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed in the moon's Sea of Tranquility on July 20, 1969, aboard the lunar module Eagle.

NASA Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot delivers the "State of NASA", February 12, 2018, at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. In his address, Lightfoot discussed what the President's Fiscal Year 2019 budget request means for America's space agency. SLS, which is managed by Marshall, will enable a new era of exploration beyond Earth's orbit by launching astronauts on missions to deep-space destinations including the Moon and Mars.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the post-Flight Readiness Review news conference for the STS-127 mission, Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations, Mike Moses, Space Shuttle Program launch integration manager, and Pete Nickolenko, STS-127 shuttle launch director, present the items discussed by managers. They confirmed a June 13 launch date for space shuttle Endeavour and its crew of seven on the STS-127 mission. The mission is the final of three flights dedicated to the assembly of the Japanese Kibo laboratory complex on the International Space Station.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Gregg Buckingham, University Affairs officer, External Relations and Business Development Directorate, addresses students of MESA, the New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement Program. The students are visiting KSC, touring facilities and meeting with mentors. MESA students, high school seniors who hold grade-point averages of at least 3.2 and who tutor other students in math and science, have made the spring trip for the past 14 years. The MESA program has close ties to the NASA Training Project at the University of New Mexico.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Gary Grigg, a survivor of the World Trade Center attack on Sept. 11, 2001, relates his experience as part of KSCs Spaceport Super Safety and Health Day. The event included other guest speakers Dr. Pamela Peeke, Navy Com. Stephen E. Iwanowicz, NASAs Dr. Kristine Calderon and Olympic-great Bruce Jenner. In addition, many vendors exhibits were on display for employees. Super Safety and Health Day was initiated at KSC in 1998 to increase awareness of the importance of safety and health among the government and contractor workforce. The theme for this years event was Safety and Health A Winning Combination.

The Earth Science Applications Showcase highlights the work of over 150 participants in the 10-week DEVELOP program that started in June. The payload for the STS-130 mission, Tranquility is a pressurized module that will provide room for many of the International Space Station's life support systems. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex in Florida, Apollo astronaut Al Worden shares his thoughts about the Space Program after receiving the Ambassador of Exploration Award. Worden is being honored for his contributions to the U.S. space program. A moon rock encased in Lucite, the award is seen at right and will be displayed at Kennedy. Worden served as command module pilot for the Apollo 15 mission, which set several moon records for NASA, including the longest lunar surface stay time, the longest lunar extravehicular activity and the first use of a lunar roving vehicle. Worden spent 38 minutes in a spacewalk outside the command module and logged a total of 295 hours, 11 minutes in space during the mission. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - As part of NASA's Ground Systems Development and Operations Program at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space shuttle-era work platforms have been removed from high bay 3 of the Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB. The work is part of a center-wide modernization and refurbishment initiative to accommodate NASAs Space Launch System and a variety of other spacecraft instead of the whole building supporting one design.The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program is developing the necessary ground systems, infrastructure and operational approaches required to safely process, assemble, transport and launch the next generation of rockets and spacecraft in support of NASAs exploration objectives. Future work also will replace the antiquated communications, power and vehicle access resources with modern efficient systems. Some of the utilities and systems slated for replacement have been used since the VAB opened in 1965.
