Moennitarri Warrior in the Costume of the Dog Dance, 1833-34. The Moennitarri are also called the Hidatsa and lived on northern plains. We know the dancer's name, Pehriska-Ruhpa meaning 'Two Ravens', who was a top warrior. He danced battle maneuvers to bring success in future fights. His headdress was made of magpie and wild turkey feathers. He holds a war whistle and a Dog society rattle made of a deer hoof attached to a beaded stick. The concept of a Malay race was originally proposed by the German scientist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach (1752-1840), and classified as the brown race. Since Blumenbach, many anthropologists have rejected his theory of five races, citing the enormous complexity of classifying races. The concept of a 'Malay race' differs with that of the ethnic Malays centered around Malaysian Malay Peninsula and parts of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The term Malay race was commonly used in the late 19th century and early 20th century to describe the Austronesian peoples.

This 1914 illustration complements a Native American myth that tells of a chief whose second son joined hunters on a buffalo hunt. When the son pursued one buffalo and followed it (on his horse) into a large pit, he could not be found by the rest of the hunters. The chief offered prizes to whoever would jump into the pit, but no one accepted until the chief offered his daughter. The man jumped in, found the son, but in the excitement to pull him up, left the rescuer in the pit. He wandered about and met a wise man from whom he secured a white stallion and emerged back into his own country (pictured here). The chief gave him his daughter in marriage and made him his successor. The chief's other son was jealous and plotted against him. The brave warrior found out and, on the next buffalo hunt, jumped into the pit and returned to the Underworld.
