It is hollowed out of the solid and decorated with chip-carved geometric and floral designs. An interesting feature is the carved 'X' on either side of the tulip. This marks the only spot where the lid will fit accurately.. .

From a family of trained English ceramists, he honed his skills in New Jersey before settling in Massachusetts as one of the founders of Chelsea Keramic Art Works and later, Dedham Pottery.
