On the deck of the USS San Diego, NASA and U.S. Navy personnel monitor the process as a crane is used to lower Orion's forward bay cover into the Pacific Ocean as part of a Orion underway recovery test on Feb. 18, 2014. The Orion boilerplate test vehicle and other hardware were secured in the well deck of the ship in preparation for the test about 100 miles off the coast of San Diego, California. NASA and the U.S. Navy conducted tests to prepare for the recovery of the Orion crew module, forward bay cover, and parachutes on its return from a deep space mission. MINA SALMAN PIER, Bahrain (Oct. 29, 2012) Bahraini fishermen make their way into the well deck of the Afloat Forward Staging Base (Interim) USS Ponce (AFSB(I) 15) after being rescued from their skiffs during heavy weather. The seven fishermen were assisted aboard by Ponce's crew, treated by the ship's medical staff and returned to shore in Bahrain. Ponce, formerly designated as an amphibious transport dock (LPD) ship, was converted and reclassified to fulfill a longstanding U.S. Central Command request for an AFSB to be located in its area of responsibility. The ship changed its homeport from Bremerton to San Diego after completing an 18-month docking planned incremental availability in Bremerton, Wash., during which the ship received extensive restorations and upgrades to support the F-35C Lightning II, E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, and CMV-22B Osprey, as well as future platforms such as the MQ-25 Stingray unmanned aircraft system.

The exercise trains forces to conduct joint maritime operations through the execution of anti-surface, anti-submarine, anti-air, amphibious and electronic warfare operations that enhance warfighting proficiency and increase interoperability among participating naval and marine forces.
