Grenade-throwing Coast Guardsman Decorated. His landing craft swept by fire from two German machine gun nests in a beach invasion at Gela, Sicily, Coast Guardsman Arthur A. Arnold, seaman first class, of New Alexandria, Virginia, stood up and hurled hand grenades to silence both batteries and permit troops from his Coast Guard barge to land. For this "exceptional bravery, prompt and decisive action and outstanding devotion to duty," Coast Guardsman Arnold was awarded the Silver Star Medal by the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Northwest African Waters, in the name of the President of the United States. In this picture, U.S. Navy Commander Lawrence W. Snell of Washington, D.C., pins the medal on Coast Guardsman Arnold. In the background, left to right, are: Lieut. Commander Richard S. However, if Eddie squares his hat, he will probably pass muster o.k. Lieut. Frederick A. Goettel, of New London, Connecticut, who is as big as Eddie is little, gives the boy the old gimlet eye that makes sure Coast Guardsmen go ashore in proper rig, and ship-shape. Lieut. Goettel, who by the way is six feet four, and weighs 230 lbs., is one of the officers attached to the Coast Guard cutter EAGLE, of which miniature Eddie Didion is an adopted crew member.

Meeting between the commander of the Matchmaker III Squadron, Captain at sea F. Visee, a vice-admiral RN, the commander of HR. Ms. Limburg, Captain Lieutenant at sea J. Jansen, and a Rear-Admiral USN on the bridge wing of Hr.Ms. Limburg, flagship of Matchmaker III. HR. Ms. Limburg (D814) was part of the NATO Squadron Matchmaker III from January 15 to March 3, 1967 (Matchmaker was the precursor of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (StanavForlant) that has existed from 1968). During that period, Matchmaker III also consisted of USS Zellars (DD777), HMS Berwick (F115) and USS McCloy (DE1038). The Netherlands led the command about Matchmaker III from 15 January to 20 August 1967. Commander of the Matchmaker III Squadron (Commatchron) was Captain at sea F. Visee. Commander of the flagship HR. Ms. Limburg was Captain-Lieutenant at sea J. Jansen.

Bay State Coast Guardsman Awarded Purple Heart for Wounds in France. Coast Guardsman Charles W. Tyner (right) fireman first class, of West Medford, Mass., receives the Purple Heart award for wounds suffered in the invasion of the Riviera of Southern France. Rear Admiral Leon C. Covell (ret) made the presentation in the presence of Coast Guard Captain E. H. Fritzsche (center) who is examining Tyner's bullet cracked helmet. Coast Guardsman Tyner was wounded in the first wave landing. He serves aboard a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport of which Captain Fritzsche is skipper. Tyner's home is at 69 Center Street in West Medford.
