Island of Cuba. Havana. The American steamship tug 'Right Arm', from the commercial salvage company contracted to recover the hull of the USS Maine. The US battleship 'Maine' sank after an explosion on 15 February 1898 in Havana harbour. World War One was to have a devastating impact on Russia. When World War One started in August 1914, Russia responded by patriotically rallying around Nicholas II. Military disasters at the Masurian Lakes and Tannenburg greatly weakened the Russian Army in the initial phases of the war. The growing influence of Gregory Rasputin over the Romanovs did a great deal to damage the royal family and by the end of the spring of 1917, the Romanovs, who had ruled Russia for just over 300 years, were no longer in charge of a Russia that had been taken over by Kerensky and the Provisional Government. By the end of 1917, the Bolsheviks led by Lenin had taken power in the major cities of Russia and introduced communist rule in those areas it controlled. The transition in Russia over the space of four years was remarkable - the fall of an autocracy and the establishment of the worlds first communist government.

Eskimos Visit a Coast Guard Cutter. A bearded Eskimo is among these visitors to a Coast Guard cutter touching in at a settlement on the coast of Greenland. He is of mixed blood. Few pure Eskimos have whiskers as luxuriant as those of the man, upper left. The natives come alongside to trade and with hopes of receiving American cigarettes. This picture is from a Kodachrome by the late Coast Guard Lt. Thomas S. La Farge, commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Natsek, who lost his life when that ship sank in the Atlantic.

Invalid transport over the Torne River. At the request of the warring powers and through the mediation of the Swedish Red Cross, in August 1915, the exchange of war invalids was started through Sweden. The invalid exchange went on with a few short breaks in January 1918 and during this time 65,509 Russian, German, Austrian, Bulgarian and Turkish disabled and sick prisoners of war were promoted.

Prayer Flag Flies Near Okinawa. Over a Coast Guard-manned LST, the church flag flies as the ship moves to the attack of Jap bases in the Keramas close to Okinawa. Coast Guardsmen and soldiers bow their heads and hear the ship's chaplain ask for guidance in the battle that lies ahead. This photo was made just before the assault on Aka Shima six days before the smash into Okinawa, the principal Jap bastion in the Ryukyus.
