Morocco. Englishmen of the Globe Venture Syndicate, captured by troops of the Sultan, on board of the Moroccan steamship 'Al-Hassani'. The English expedition, aided by the disgruntled natives, occupied the port of Arksis, but were interrupted while disembarking supplies and ammunition by the Jerifian steamer 'Al-Hassani'. British opened fire from their steamer 'Tourmaline' to prevent the capture of one of their boats, but one boat was captured before it could reach the 'Tourmaline'. Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Kite and observer in basket aloft and under tow from the destroyer HMS RECRUIT. This photograph was taken whilst Cody was demonstrating his kites to the Navy. Whilst they did not use any of his kites they did recommend Cody to the Army. According to Cody he was fascinated by kites from a young age, when he saw the Chinese cooks who worked on the cattle drives making and flying toy kites. Like many of Cody's tales of his early life, it is difficult to say whether this is true or not.. In friendly competition he and his sons used to build kites and fly them to great heights. They began building larger and larger versions until Cody decided to try and construct a man carrier. After many trials and the occasional accident Cody designed and built a system that could easily carry a man to a height of over 2500 feet and hold him suitably stable whilst he was in the air. His design was purchased by the war office and Cody was employed as kiting in

Sinking of SS Athenia, September 1939 An elderly woman is hoisted aboard the American cargo steamship City of Flint after spending the night in a lifeboat. She had been rescued from the passenger liner Athenia which was torpedoed by U-30 on the evening of 3 September 1939 off the north west coast of Ireland and sank the next morning.

Swastika Defaced British Ensign Abroad Illegal Immigrant Vessel -- Some of the refugees aboard the transport "Runnymede Park" flaunt a British Ensign painted over with the Swastika when the vessel left Port de Bouc, France, August 22, bound for Gibraltar. Into Gibraltar August 26 steamed three British transports carrying 4,300 "Stay Put" Illegal Immigrants bound for Hamburg. The illegal immigrants attempted to enter Palestine but were halted and subsequently offered refuge in France. They declined the offer of settling in France so the British authorities are now sending them to live in Germany. August 26, 1947. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).
