Alarm message investigation and rescue service. 39 nautical miles to the west of Helgoland is a collision between the Norwegian tanker Anne Mildred Brøvig and the English coastal Pentland. The Norwegian tanker is sinking. The German tonnetger Walter Körte is busy with oil control. Around 16,000 tons of crude oil in the North Sea has ended up in the collision. A grumpman tracker of airplane squadron 2 (4) and a Neptune of airplane squadron 320 are on the spot.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War After making a rendezvous off the North African coast the five Italian cruisers and two battleships in line ahead follow HMS VALIANT towards Malta to surrender. There were a further four Italian destroyers accompanying them (out of view). They were also escorted by units of the British destroyer flotillas as well as VALIANT and WARSPITE (from which this photograph was taken).

Lieutenant Commander (A) Freddy Charlton, British Fleet Air Arm pilot, had a remarkable escape when the long-range petrol tank of his Chance-Vought Corsair fighter burst into flames (seen here) as he landed on the deck of the aircraft carrier. Both pilot and plane escaped damage.

Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody surrounded by sailors in a breeches buoy attached to a kite on the deck of the battleship HMS REVENGE just about to be or shortly after being raised by the kite. Note the use of the breeches buoy instead of the usual basket beneath the kite. This photograph was taken whilst Cody was demonstrating his kites to the Navy. Whilst they did not use any of his kites they did recommend Cody to the Army. According to Cody he was fascinated by kites from a young age, when he saw the Chinese cooks who worked on the cattle drives making and flying toy kites. Like many of Cody's tales of his early life, it is difficult to say whether this is true or not.. In friendly competition he and his sons used to build kites and fly them to great heights. They began building larger and larger versions until Cody decided to try and construct a man carrier. After many trials and the occasional accident Cody designed and built a system that could easily carry a

HMS Legion moves alongside the damaged and listing HMS Ark Royal in order to take off survivors. The aircraft carrier was torpedoed by the German U-boat U 81 off Gibraltar. HMS Ark Royal sank the following day. 13 November 1941
