Ford Carrier Strike Group conducting SWATT exercises to increase lethality, ensure combat readiness, and promote tactical innovation. SWATT is led by the Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center, whose mission is to increase the tactical proficiency and lethality of the surface force.

U.S. FIFTH FLEET AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (Sept. 21, 2012) Sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG 95) lower a rigid-hull inflatable boat during a man overboard exercise. James E. Williams is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations, theater security cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom.

A pallet of supplies is passed on a wire highline rig between the fleet oiler USNS NEOSHO (T-AO 143) and the amphibious assault ship USS SAIPAN (LHA 2) as an underway replenishment is conducted off the coast of Liberia during Operation Sharp Edge. S70-35645 (17 April 1970) --- Astronaut James A. Lovell Jr., commander, is hoisted aboard a helicopter from the USS Iwo Jima, prime recovery vessel for the mission. Lovell was the last of the three Apollo 13 crewmembers to egress the Command Module (CM) and the last to be lifted aboard the helicopter. He was preceded by astronauts John L. Swigert Jr., command module pilot; and Fred W. Haise Jr., lunar module pilot. The CM and a U.S. Navy underwater demolition team swimmer can be seen in the ocean background. A test version of the Orion crew module is guided toward the flooded well deck of the USS San Diego during Underway Recovery Test 5. NASA's Ground Systems Development and Operations Program and the U.S. Navy are conducting a series of tests using the ship's well deck, the test module, various watercraft and equipment to prepare for recovery of Orion on its return from deep space missions. The test will allow the team to demonstrate and evaluate recovery processes, procedures, hardware and personnel in open waters. Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and NASA's Journey to Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion is scheduled to launch on NASA's Space Launch System in late 2018.

During Underway Recovery Test 6, Kennedy Space Center's NASA Recovery Team spent a week aboard the USS Anchorage where they and the U.S. Navy tested procedures and ground support equipment to improve recovery procedures and hardware ahead of Orion's next flight, Exploration Mission-1, when it splashes down in the Pacific Ocean. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Workers, on the deck of NASA's Liberty Star ship and in a boat in the Atlantic Ocean, prepare to begin testing of an Orion flight test capsule.The Crew Module Recovery Attach Fitting Test (CRAFT) on the capsule, which began at-sea operations Nov. 29, is under way. Multiple attach clips are being evaluated against the current recovery cleat configuration by U.S. Air Force pararescue jumpers (PJs) and a U.S. Navy diver. The 21st Century Ground Systems Program will use data collected from the tests to help develop ground operations support equipment that could be used to recover an uncrewed Orion flight test capsule after splashdown. The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle is NASA's next-generation spacecraft being developed for deep space missions to asteroids, moons and other interplanetary destinations throughout the solar system.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter MATINICUS (WPB-1315), with a load of Cuban refugees, approaches the dock landing ship USS WHIDBEY ISLAND (LSD-41) for a personnel transfer. The Cuban refugees are being retrieved from small boats, rafts and anything that will float. When the cutters reach maximum capacity, they rendzevous with a U.S. Navy ship and transfer the refugees which are then treansported to the U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
