The Royal Navy during the Second World War The Campaign in Sicily, July 1943: In hazy sunlight a smoke screen is being laid by the fleet ships as they leave after the bombardment of enemy troops still holding out at Catania, Sicily, by HMS WARSPITE from which this photograph was taken. It was called on by the army to carry out this task and hurled tons of shells at a range between 15,000 and 11,000 yards.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War Rescue nets fitted on the British aircraft carrier HMS ILLUSTRIOUS in the Indian Ocean. The nets, suspended from wireless masts, trail on the surface of the sea during rescue operations, and are hoisted up by raising the wireless masts. When in the slung position the nets are close to the masts, which remain down; the nets can be lowered quickly into the trailing position should an aircraft crash into the sea. The nets were invented by some of the ship's officers, and have already saved an aircrew's life. In view of the experience gained they have been enlarged, to afford a better chance of rescue. Here the nets are trailing in the sea as for a rescue.
