The Battle of the Atlantic, 1939-1945 Royal Navy destroyer HMS ANTHONY rescues survivors from a lifeboat from the SS CITY OF BENARES which had been been adrift for nine days after the ship sank on 17 September 1940. The CITY OF BENARES was evacuating children from Britain to Canada under the auspices of the Children's Overseas Reception Board CORB as part of Convoy OB 213 when it was torpedoed and sunk with heavy loss of life in the Atlantic by the German submarine U-48. The sinking became one of the most notorious events of the Second World War.

American Advance Into Trobriand Islands - These are the first pictures of the American advance into Kiriwina and Woodlark islands, and show part of a long line of small ships on their way to the islands. Landings unknown to the Japanese were made on both these islands and were quickly consolidated so ending the long period of the Allied holding war in the southwest Pacific. July 14, 1943.

Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Coastal Command The Norwegian-registered D/S URSA manoeuvres desperately to avoid rocket and cannon fire from aircraft of the Banff Strike Wing, 19 September 1944. Three steamships - URSA, LYNX and TYRIFJORD - were making their way from Hamburg to Tromso and Hammerfest when attacked by 21 Beaufighters and 11 Mosqiutos in a fjord near Stavenes. URSA suffered damage but survived, while the other two vessels were sunk. A Beaufighter of No 144 Squadron was shot down.

The Apollo 11 mission, the first manned lunar mission, launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida via the Saturn V launch vehicle on July 16, 1969 and safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. The Saturn V vehicle was developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) under the direction of Dr. Wernher von Braun. Aboard were Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, Command Module (CM) pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., Lunar Module (LM) pilot. The CM, piloted by Michael Collins remained in a parking orbit around the Moon while the LM, named Eagle’’, carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, landed on the Moon. Armstrong was the first human to ever stand on the lunar surface, followed by Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin. During 2½ hours of surface exploration, the crew collected 47 pounds of lunar surface material for analysis back on Earth. The Royal Navy during the Second World War A surrendered E-boat doing 30 knots with two other E-Boats (not visible) alongside an accompanying MGB heading to HMS HORNET, the light coastal forces base at Gosport, to be taken over by the Royal Navy.

The first two depth charges dropped explode around the stern of the U-boat while the rear gunner's fire straddles the bows end conning tower. On a patrol in the Atlantic a R.C.A.F. , Sunderland of coastal command sighted a U-boat. The flying boat attacked with machine gun fire and depth charges. In this attack the front gunners fired to such good effect that the German gun crew were almost all killed or wounded and all but one of the U-boat's guns put out of action. New Britain Submarine Disappears For 23 Hours With 79 Men On Board During Trials: Destroyers speeding to the scene of the disaster - picture from the air.With 79 men on board, Britain's newest submarine the "Thetis", disappeared for 23 hours off Great Orme's Head, North Wales. She was undergoing acceptance trials after leaving the Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, Cheshire, and had on board in addition to her crew of 23 a large number of experts. The "Thetis" dived in 130-feet of water and failed to return to the surface, but after 23 hours she was seen partly above water and men on board started to leave by means of the Davis escape apparatus with which all British submarine are equipped. 'Ducks' Bringing Supplies In From Ships In The Harbor. These Supplies Were Later Transferred (From The 'Ducks') To A 6X6 Crane And Returned To The Ship. This Speeded Up The Unloading Of The Ships And Stacking Of Supplies. Okinawa, 7 August 1945.

Alarm message investigation and rescue service. 39 nautical miles to the west of Helgoland is a collision between the Norwegian tanker Anne Mildred Brøvig and the English coastal Pentland. The Norwegian tanker is sinking. Around 16,000 tons of crude oil in the North Sea has ended up in the collision. A grumpman tracker of airplane squadron 2 (4) and a Neptune of airplane squadron 320 are on the spot.

The Royal Navy during the Second World War A Grumman Avenger of 857 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm returned from one of the strikes against the Sakishima Islands and landed on with only one wheel down to make an almost perfect landing on board HMS INDOMITABLE. The aircraft was only slightly damaged. These operations were in support of the American invasion of Okinawa.
