CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At NASA Kennedy Space Center's Visitor Complex in Florida, Apollo astronaut Al Worden (center) is flanked by Center Director Bob Cabana (left) and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. Worden was presented with the Ambassador of Exploration Award to honor his contributions to the U.S. space program. A moon rock encased in Lucite, the award is seen in the foreground and will be displayed at Kennedy. Worden served as command module pilot for the Apollo 15 mission, which set several moon records for NASA, including the longest lunar surface stay time, the longest lunar extravehicular activity and the first use of a lunar roving vehicle. Worden spent 38 minutes in a spacewalk outside the command module and logged a total of 295 hours, 11 minutes in space during the mission. He was honored for his outstanding personal and professional efforts in supporting the U.S. space program, especially in his current role. Beagley is chairman of the National Space Club Florida Committee, which created the award to recognize significant achievements and contributions made in Florida to American aerospace efforts. It is named for Dr. Kurt H. Debus, first director of KSC, from 1962 to 1974.

Glenn soon was followed into orbit by Scott Carpenter, Walter Schirra and Gordon Cooper. Their fellow Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and Virgil "Gus" Grissom flew earlier suborbital flights. Deke Slayton, a member of NASA's original Mercury 7 astronauts, was grounded by a medical condition until the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Inside the Space Shuttle Atlantis attraction at NASAs Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida, former NASA astronaut and Hall of Famer Steve Hawley walks the red carpet at the 2014 U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame Induction ceremony. Space shuttle astronauts and space explorers Shannon Lucid and Jerry Ross were inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2014.The 2014 inductees are selected by a committee of Hall of Fame astronauts, former NASA officials, flight directors, historians and journalists. The process is administered by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. To be eligible, an astronaut must have made his or her first flight at least 17 years before the induction. Candidates must be a U.S. citizen and a NASA-trained commander, pilot or mission specialist who has orbited the earth at least once. Including Lucid and Ross, 87 astronauts have been inducted into the AHOF.

Secretary Dirk Kempthorne leading press conference, at Main Interior, on release of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessment estimating the existence of 85.4 trilion cubic feet of undiscovered, technically recoverable gas from natural gas hydrates on the Alaska North Slope. Secretary Kempthorne, joined by USGS Director Mark Myers, indicated that the USGS assessment was the first-ever resource estimate of technically recoverable natural gas hydrates, which are naturally occurring, ice-like solids in which water molecules trap natural gas molecules in a cage-like structure known as a clathrate.

During Super Safety and Health Day at KSC, keynote speaker Dr. Beck Weathers grimaces over the satellite photo of Mt. Everest being presented by Center Director Roy Bridges. Weathers spoke about his ordeal of surviving the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster and the lessons learned from the experience. Safety Day is a full day of NASA-sponsored, KSC and 45th Space Wing events involving a number of health and safety related activities: Displays, vendors, technical paper sessions, panel discussions, a keynote speaker, etc. The entire Center and Wing stand down to participate in the planned events. Safety Day is held annually to proactively increase awareness in safety and health among the government and contractor workforce population. The first guiding principle at KSC is Safety and Health First.” KSC’s number one goal is to Assure sound, safe and efficient practices and processes are in place for privatized/commercialized launch site processing.

Chroniclers Ceremony. Kennedy Space Center celebrated the latest honorees to have their names added to the Chroniclers wall at the NASA News Center in Florida during a ceremony on May 1, 2023. From left, Red Huber, Bob Granath, and Mark Kramer were nominated by other members of the news media and selected by a panel of NASA officials and current space reporters. The award recognizes retirees of the news and communications business who helped spread news of American space exploration from Kennedy for 10 years or more. The inductees join the list of 79 other Kennedy Chroniclers whose names hang proudly on the wall in the Bull Pen, the NASA News Center room where media traditionally gather to research and file their stories during launches.

Whitehead is a manager in the Centers Payload Processing Directorate. The award is given to recognize employees who have demonstrated behaviors consistent with the spirit of One NASA and are called Peer Awards because candidates must be nominated by their peers.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The Apollo/Saturn V Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida hosted a celebration on the 40th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 15 mission. Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott, Command Module Pilot Al Worden and an elite gathering of Apollo-era astronauts were on hand for the event and panel discussion. Here, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong speaks to the invited guests.Worden circled the moon while Scott and the late Jim Irwin, the Lunar Module commander, made history when they became the first humans to drive a vehicle on the surface of the moon. They also provided extensive descriptions and photographic documentation of geologic features in the vicinity of the Hadley Rille landing site during their three days on the lunar surface.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- In the Training Auditorium at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, STS-133 Commander Steve Lindsey presents Kennedy Center Director Bob Cabana with a collage of the mission's highlights during a crew return event. The crew launched from Kennedy's Launch Pad 39A aboard space shuttle Discovery on its final flight on February 24, 2011 to the International Space Station. The crew delivered Robonaut 2 and the Permanent Multipurpose Module packed with supplies and critical spare parts on a 13-day mission. Discovery is being processed for retirement and will be displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va.

The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration and demonstrate our commitment and capability to extend human presence to the Moon and beyond. The primary goal of Artemis I is to thoroughly test the integrated systems before crewed missions by operating the spacecraft in a deep space environment, testing Orions heat shield, and recovering the crew module after reentry, descent, and splashdown.

Glenn, who made history in 1962 as the first American to orbit the Earth, completing three orbits in a five-hour flight aboard Friendship 7, will fly his second space mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery this October. Glenn is retiring from the Senate at the end of this year and will be a payload specialist aboard STS-95

The inaugural Glenn Symposium focused on advancements in aerospace technology including power and propulsion, autonomy and communications, low boom supersonics, hypersonics, and more. Discussion also encompassed humans returning to the moon, including challenges associated with the 2024 mission.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Center Director and former astronaut Roy D. Bridges, Jr., (holding scissors) cuts the ribbon at a ceremony officially opening the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame as part of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Invited guests and dignitaries look on, such as former astronauts Edgar D. Mitchell on Bridges' left and James Lovell on his right. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the induction of four Space Shuttle astronauts into the Hall of Fame including Daniel Brandenstein, Robert "Hoot" Gibson, Story Musgrave, and Sally Ride. Conceived by six of the Mercury Program astronauts, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame opened in 1990 to provide a place where space travelers could be remembered for their participation and accomplishments in the U.S. space program. The four new inductees join 48 previously honored astronauts from the ranks of the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, and Space Shuttle programs.

Astronaut John Young (left), the keynote speaker at the Thirty-Fifth Space Congress, is presented with a model of the International Space Station by the Congress' General Chairman Bruce Melnick. Young is the associate director responsible for technical, operational and safety oversight of all NASA programs and activities assigned to the Johnson Space Center. Melnick, a former astronaut, is currently vice president of The Boeing Company and is responsible for the Payload Ground Operations Contract at Kennedy Space Center. The Thirty-Fifth Space Congress, sponsored by the Canaveral Council of Technical Societies, is being held in Cocoa Beach, Florida, from April 28 to May 1 and is a gathering of the world's aerospace community to discuss the status and future of space activities around the world

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - At the 1st Space Exploration Conference Continuing the Voyage of Discovery, being held at Disneys Contemporary Resort in Orlando, the NASA Explorer School team from McNair High School in Dekalb County, Ga., receives the Space Exploration Video Festival award sponsored by Lockheed Martin. The conference has drawn attendees from around the world.

NASA's 9th Annual Robotic Mining Competition concludes with an awards ceremony May 18, 2018, at the Apollo/Saturn V Center at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida.
