KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Inside the mobile service tower on Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, one segment of the fairing is lifted toward the STEREO spacecraft in the foreground. The fairing is a molded structure that fits flush with the outside surface of the Delta II upper stage booster and forms an aerodynamically smooth nose cone, protecting the spacecraft during launch and ascent. The STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) mission is the first to take measurements of the sun and solar wind in 3-dimension. This new view will improve our understanding of space weather and its impact on the Earth. Designed and built by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) , the STEREO mission is being managed by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. APL will maintain command and control of the observatories throughout the mission, while NASA tracks and receives the data, determines the orbit of the satellites, and coordinates the science results. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In this view from Level 5, wing platform, of Atlantis payload bay, the U.S. Lab Destiny can be seen near the bottom. A key element in the construction of the International Space Station, Destiny is 28 feet long and weighs 16 tons. Destiny will be attached to the Unity node of the ISS using the Shuttles robot arm, seen here on the left with the help of an elbow camera, facing left. Measurements of the elbow camera revealed only a one-inch clearance from the U.S. Lab payload, which is under review. Destiny will fly on STS-98, the seventh construction flight to the ISS. The Manipulator Flight Demonstration (MFD) payload is installed into the payload bay of the Space Shuttle Orbiter Discovery in Orbiter Processing Facility 2. The MFD is one of several payloads that will fly on the STS-85 mission. This payload is designed to test the operational capability of the Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System (JEM RMS) Small Fine Arm (SFA), which can be seen atop its Multi-Purpose Experiment Support Structure (MPESS) carrier that will serve as a platform in the payload bay for the robotic arm experiment. The arm, which will be a part of the JEM element of the International Space Station, will be operated from the orbiters aft flight deck during the 11-day mission. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Inside a protected clean room tent on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the second half of the fairing is ready for installation around NASAs Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft. The fairing is a molded structure that fits flush with the outside surface of the rocket and forms an aerodynamically smooth nose cone, protecting the spacecraft during launch and ascent. The IBEX satellite will make the first map of the boundary between the Solar System and interstellar space. IBEX is targeted for launch from the Kwajalein Atoll, a part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, on Oct. 19. IBEX will be launched aboard a Pegasus rocket dropped from under the wing of an L-1011 aircraft flying over the Pacific Ocean. The Pegasus will carry the spacecraft approximately 130 miles above Earth and place it in orbit.

Astronaut Scott Kelly initiated VEG-01 B, the second crop of lettuce, on July, 8, 2015, and both Kelly and Astronaut Kjell Lindgren cared for the plants. The crop grew for 33 days. VEG-01 B included one set of six plant pillows planted with red romaine lettuce seeds. On Aug. 10, 2015, the crew harvested and consumed leaves from each plant. This was the first crop grown and consumed in NASA hardware. They harvested the rest of the plant tissue and froze it in the stations Minus Eighty-Degree Laboratory Freezer for ISS (MELFI) for return to Earth for further study including microbial analysis, antioxidant capacity, mineral analysis and anthocyanin concentration.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - At Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, workers monitor the first of three solid rocket boosters for the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket for launch of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, as it is positioned next to the rocket's first stage in the pad's mobile service tower.WISE will survey the entire sky at infrared wavelengths, creating a cosmic clearinghouse of hundreds of millions of objects which will be catalogued and provide a vast storehouse of knowledge about the solar system, the Milky Way, and the universe. VANDENBERG AFB, CALIF. - On the SLC-2 launch pad, the first half of the Delta II fairing for the Aqua-EOS satellite is lifted up the gantry. The Delta II will launch the Aqua-EOS satellite, one of a series of spacebased platforms that are central to NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE), a long-term study of the scope, dynamics and implications of global change. The Aqua program is composed of Aqua and other spacecraft (including Terra and Aura) and a data distribution system (ESDIS, and Mission Operations Center Implementation Team). Flying in an orbit that covers the globe every 16 days, Aqua will provide a six-year chronology of the planet and its processes. ISS028-E-015647 (10 July 2011) --- This picture of Atlantis' main and subsystem engines is one of a series of images showing various parts of the space shuttle Atlantis in Earth orbit as photographed by one of three crew members -- half the station crew -- who were equipped with still cameras for this purpose on the International Space Station as the shuttle posed for photos and visual surveys and performed a back-flip for the rendezvous pitch maneuver (RPM). A 1000 millimeter lens was used to capture this particular series of images.

The move of the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is nearly complete as it is lowered onto the workstand in the Space Station Processing Facility. The SRTM, which is the primary payload on mission STS-99, consists of a specially modified radar system that will fly onboard the Space Shuttle during the 11-day mission scheduled for launch in September 1999. The objective of this radar system is to obtain the most complete high-resolution digital topographic database of the Earth. It will gather data that will result in the most accurate and complete topographic map of the Earth's surface that has ever been assembled. SRTM is an international project spearheaded by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency and NASA, with participation of the German Aerospace Center DLR. STS112-E-5333 (12 October 2002) --- A high angle view of the S0 (S-zero) truss which was photographed during a six hour, four minute spacewalk, the second of three scheduled for the STS-112 mission. Astronauts Piers J. Sellers and David A. Wolf are the assigned spacewalkers for all three. In a clean-room environment at North Vandenberg Air Force Base, technicians work on the AIM spacecraft. The AIM spacecraft will fly three instruments designed to study polar mesospheric clouds located at the edge of space, 50 miles above the Earth's surface in the coldest part of the planet's atmosphere. The mission's primary goal is to explain why these clouds form and what has caused them to become brighter and more numerous and appear at lower latitudes in recent years. AIM's results will provide the basis for the study of long-term variability in the mesospheric climate and its relationship to global climate change. VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- In a processing facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the three stages of the Pegasus XL launch vehicle are seen immediately prior to installation of the vehicles wing. The Orbital Sciences Corp. Pegasus rocket will launch the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) into space. After the rocket and spacecraft are processed at Vandenberg, they will be flown on the Orbital Sciences L-1011 carrier aircraft to the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site at the Pacific Oceans Kwajalein Atoll for launch. The high-energy x-ray telescope will conduct a census for black holes, map radioactive material in young supernovae remnants, and study the origins of cosmic rays and the extreme physics around collapsed stars. This photograph depicts the Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI) being installed in the X-Ray Calibration Facility (XRCF) vacuum chamber for testing at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The XRCF vacuum chamber simulates a space environment with low temperature and pressure. The x-ray images from SXI on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-12 (GOES-12) will be used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Air Force to forecast the intensity and speed of solar disturbances that could destroy satellite electronics or disrupt long-distance radio communications. The SXI will observe solar flares, coronal mass ejections, coronal holes, and active regions in the x-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum. These features are the dominant sources of disturbances in space weather. Biotechnology Refrigerator that preserves samples for use in (or after culturing in) the NASA Bioreactor. The unit is shown extracted from a middeck locker shell and with thermal blankets partially removed. The NASA Bioreactor provides a low turbulence culture environment which promotes the formation of large, three-dimensional cell clusters. The Bioreactor is rotated to provide gentle mixing of fresh and spent nutrient without inducing shear forces that would damage the cells. Due to their high level of cellular organization and specialization, samples constructed in the bioreactor more closely resemble the original tumor or tissue found in the body. In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility 2 (SAEF-2), the 2001 Mars Odyssey Orbiter sits on a workstand (left) while workers at right prepare its solar arrays for illumination testing. The orbiter will carry three science instruments THEMIS, the Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS), and the Mars Radiation Environment Experiment (MARIE). THEMIS will map the mineralogy and morphology of the Martian surface using a high-resolution camera and a thermal infrared imaging spectrometer. The GRS will achieve global mapping of the elemental composition of the surface and determine the abundance of hydrogen in the shallow subsurface. The MARIE will characterize aspects of the near-space radiation environment with regards to the radiation-related risk to human explorers. ISS023-E-020036 (7 April 2010) --- This nadir 800mm view of the top part of Discovery's cabin was provided by one of the Expedition 23 crew members onboard the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson, STS-131 mission specialist, waves at his awaiting hosts through the starboard side upper window. The shuttle was in the midst of a back-flip, performed to enable the station's cameras to survey it for possible damage. The rendezvous and subsequent docking occurred early on April 7. Once the Discovery crew joins the Expedition 23 crew aboard the orbital complex, nine men and four women will begin several days of joint activities, including three spacewalks.

Shuttle crew escape systems test is conducted by astronauts Steven R. Nagel (left) and Manley L. (Sonny) Carter in JSC One Gravity Mockup and Training Facilities Bldg 9A crew compartment trainer (CCT). Nagel and Carter are evaluating methods for crew escape during Space Shuttle controlled gliding flight. JSC test was done in advance of tests scheduled for facilities in California and Utah. Here, Carter serves as test subject evaluating egress positioning for the tractor rocket escape method - one of the two systems currently being closely studied by NASA.

STS035-12-005 (2-10 Dec 1990) --- During STS-35, middeck stowage volume G and a contingency water container (CWC) were utilized to remedy a problem onboard Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 102. A hose connecting OV-102's waste water system to the CWC was used in order to bypass a suspected clog in the line from the waste water tank to the exit nozzle. On flight day seven, Pilot Guy S. Gardner carried out an inflight maintenance (IFM) procedure by connecting a spare hose from the line to the container. The CWC is a rubber-lined duffle bag that holds about 95 pounds of water and is used in situations where water cannot be dumped overboard normally.

The Arecibo Observatory is a radio telescope just over 1,000 feet (305 m) across, the largest single radio telescope. The main metal collecting dish sits fixed a hemispherical karst sinkhole. Because it is fixed, a spherical reflector hangs 500 feet (150 m) over the dish on a 900 ton platform, known as 'the feed'. This view is inside the reflector assembly. The observatory is the primary location of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, NAIC.

The STS-100 mission launched for the International Space Station (ISS) on April 19, 2001 as the sixth station assembly flight. Main objectives included the delivery and installation of the Canadian-built Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS), or Canadarm2, the installation of a UHF anterna for space-to-space communications for U.S. based space walks, and the delivery of supplies via the Italian Multipurpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Raffaello . This is an STS-110 onboard photo of Astronaut James S. Voss, Expedition Two flight engineer, peering into the pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA-2) prior hatch opening. The picture was taken by one of the STS-100 crew members inside the PMA.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Inside a protected clean room tent on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, workers install the fairing around NASAs Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, spacecraft. The fairing is a molded structure that fits flush with the outside surface of the rocket and forms an aerodynamically smooth nose cone, protecting the spacecraft during launch and ascent. The IBEX satellite will make the first map of the boundary between the Solar System and interstellar space. IBEX is targeted for launch from the Kwajalein Atoll, a part of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, on Oct. 19. IBEX will be launched aboard a Pegasus rocket dropped from under the wing of an L-1011 aircraft flying over the Pacific Ocean. The Pegasus will carry the spacecraft approximately 130 miles above Earth and place it in orbit.

iss051e039882 (5/8/2017) --- A view of Spacecraft Fire Experiment-III (Saffire-III) award the John Glenn Orbital ATK 7 (OA-7) Cygnus spacecraft, taken during cargo transfer operations (OPS). The NASA Advanced Exploration Systems program began a project to develop and demonstrate spacecraft fire safety technologies in relevant environments. The keystone of these demonstrations is a large-scale fire safety experiment conducted on an International Space Station (ISS) re-supply vehicle after it has undocked from the ISS and before it enters the atmosphere.

ISS040-E-070868 (21 July 2014) --- This close-up view shows the docking mechanism of the unpiloted Russian ISS Progress 55 resupply ship as it undocks from the International Space Station's Pirs Docking Compartment at 5:44 p.m. (EDT) on July 21, 2014 after spending more than three months at the orbiting complex. After undocking, the Progress moved to a safe distance away from the station for 10 days of engineering tests before it is deorbited on July 31. Filled with trash and station discards, Progress 55 will burn up as it re-enters Earths atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.

TRACT 2 Frame Drop Test AT NASA Langley Research Center's Landing and Impact Research (LandIR) Facility

STS109-E-5141 (3 March 2002) --- Astronauts will find these handrails on the Hubble Space Telescope very helpful during a series of scheduled space walks throughout the coming week. STS-109 crew members used a digital still camera, as well as other cameras, to survey and document various areas on the giant telescope. This mission marks the fourth shuttle visit to the Hubble since its deployment in April of 1990.
