Once the United States' space program had progressed from Earth's orbit into outerspace, the prospect of building and maintaining a permanent presence in space was realized. To accomplish this feat, NASA launched a temporary workstation, Skylab, to discover the effects of low gravity and weightlessness on the human body, and also to develop tools and equipment that would be needed in the future to build and maintain a more permanent space station. The structures, techniques, and work schedules had to be carefully designed to fit this unique construction site. The components had to be lightweight for transport into orbit, yet durable. The station also had to be made with removable parts for easy servicing and repairs by astronauts. All of the tools necessary for service and repairs had to be designed for easy manipulation by a suited astronaut. This composite image includes a photograph of pilot Joe Algranti testing the Multi-Axis Space Test Inertia Facility (MASTIF) inside Altitude Wind Tunnel at NASAs Lewis Research Center with other images designed to simulate the interior of a Mercury space capsule. As part of the space agencys preparations for Project Mercury missions, the seven Mercury astronauts traveled to Cleveland in early 1960 to train on the MASTIF. Researchers used the device to familiarize the astronauts with the sensations of an out-of-control spacecraft. The MASTIF was a three-axis rig with a pilots chair mounted in the center. An astronaut was secured in a foam couch in the center of the rig. The rig then spun on three axes from 2 to 50 rotations per minute. The astronauts used small nitrogen gas thrusters to bring the MASTIF under control. In the fall of 1959, prior to the astronauts visit, Lewis researcher James Useller and Algranti perfected and calibrated the MASTIF.

S65-61806 (15 Dec. 1965) --- Astronaut Thomas P. Stafford, Gemini-6 prime crew pilot, is seen through spacecraft window as he awaits the remaining minutes of the Gemini-6 prelaunch countdown. A two-day mission in space was scheduled for astronauts Stafford and Walter M. Schirra Jr. (out of frame), command pilot. NASA successfully launched Gemini-6 from Pad 19 at 8 37 a.m. (EST) on Dec. 15, 1965. An attempt will be made to rendezvous Gemini-6 with Gemini-7.

An Atlas/Centaur mass model undergoes a separation test inside the Space Power Chambers at NASA Lewis Research Center. Lewis was in the midst of an extensive effort to prepare the Centaur second-stage rocket for its missions to send the Surveyor spacecraft to the moon as a precursor to the Apollo missions. As part of these preparations, Lewis management decided to convert its Altitude Wind Tunnel into two large test chambersthe Space Power Chambers. The conversion included the removal of the tunnel’s internal components and the insertion of bulkheads to seal off the new chambers within the tunnel. One chamber could simulate conditions found at 100 miles altitude, while this larger chamber simulated the upper atmosphere. In this test series, researchers wanted to verify that the vehicle’s retrorockets would properly separate the Centaur from the Atlas. The model was suspended horizontally on a trolley system inside chamber. A net was hung at one end to catch the jettisoned Atlas model.

S61-E-021 (7 Dec 1993) --- This close-up view of one of two High Gain Antennae (HGA) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) was photographed with an Electronic Still Camera (ESC), and down linked to ground controllers soon afterward. Endeavour's crew captured the HST on December 4, 1993 in order to service the telescope over a period of five days. Four of the crew members have been working in alternating pairs outside Endeavour's shirt sleeve environment to service the giant telescope. Electronic still photography is a relatively new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality. The electronic still camera has flown as an experiment on several other shuttle missions.

S66-44886 (1 Aug. 1966) --- Four panels of experiment S-10 carried on the Agena Target Vehicle launched for the Gemini-8 mission. This package of test panels was retrieved from the Gemini-8 Agena by astronaut Michael Collins during the Gemini-10 mission. Experimenters expected micrometeorites to bombard the panels during their stay in space.

This frame from an animation strings together images from the rover's front hazard avoidance camera taken during the stand-up process of the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. The first frame shows the rover's wheels tucked under in pre-stand-up position. The following frames show the stages of the stand-up process. The rover first elevates itself and unfolds the wheels. It then lowers, lifts and lowers again into its final position. After the end of the Apollo missions, NASA's next adventure into space was the marned spaceflight of Skylab. Using an S-IVB stage of the Saturn V launch vehicle, Skylab was a two-story orbiting laboratory, one floor being living quarters and the other a work room. The objectives of Skylab were to enrich our scientific knowledge of the Earth, the Sun, the stars, and cosmic space; to study the effects of weightlessness on living organisms, including man; to study the effects of the processing and manufacturing of materials utilizing the absence of gravity; and to conduct Earth resource observations. At the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC), astronauts and engineers spent hundreds of hours in an MSFC Neutral Buoyancy Simulator (NBS) rehearsing procedures to be used during the Skylab mission, developing techniques, and detecting and correcting potential problems. The NBS was a 40-foot deep water tank that simulated the weightlessness environment of space. This photograph shows astronaut

Technicians prepare a full-scale capsule which would be used for the first rocket-launching on March 11, 1959. The purpose of the test would be to simulate a ground-level or beach abort. Joseph Shortal wrote (vol. 3, p. 27): It was a test of the ability of the escape system to rescue the astronaut in case of a malfunction of the launch vehicle prior to flight. This test was carried out by PARD under the direction of W.S. Blanchard, Jr., and was part of the program designated F57 at PARD. For these tests capsule shape C was used. -- Published in Joseph A. Evans, command module pilot of the Apollo 17 lunar landing mission, participates in extravehicular activity training in a water tank in Building 5 at the Manned Spacecraft Center. Evans is scheduled to perform trans-Earth extravehicular activity after the Apollo 17 spacecraft leaves lunar orbit on its way back home. The structure in the picture simulates the Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) bay of the Apollo 17 Service Module.
