Hoffman, anchored to a foot restraint on the end of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS) arm, inserts the new Wide Field/Planetary Camera (WFPC-II) into its place on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Astronaut F. Story Musgrave, who shared the duties of replacing the camera, is partially visible at right edge of frame. Electronic still photography is a relatively new technology which provides the means for a handheld camera to electronically capture and digitize an image with resolution approaching film quality. The electronic still camera has flown as an experiment on several other shuttle missions.

S70-41984 (June 1970) --- Full-scale propagation test at the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) of fire inside an Apollo Service Module (SM) oxygen tank. The photograph from a motion picture sequence taken from outside the vessel shows failure of tank conduit with abrupt loss of oxygen pressure. The test was part of the Apollo 13 post flight investigation of the Service Module explosion incident.

This photograph was taken in the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Neutral Buoyancy Simulator (NBS) during the testing of an emergency procedure to deploy a twin-pole sunshade to protect the orbiting workshop from overheating due to the loss of its thermal shield. The spacecraft suffered damage to its sunshield during its launch on May 14, 1973. This photograph shows the base plate used to hold the twin-pole in place, the bag to hold the fabric sail, and the lines that were used to draw the sail into place. Extensive testing and many hours of practice in simulators, such as the NBS, helped prepare the Skylab crewmen for extravehicular performance in the weightless environment. This huge water tank simulated the weightless environment that the astronauts would encounter in space.

. orion_earth_moon_20221121. On Nov. 21, 2022, a camera on Orion's solar array wing captured this view of the spacecraft, the Earth and the Moon. Orion was making its outbound powered flyby of the Moon as part of the Artemis I mission, approaching within 80 miles of the lunar surface. Artemis I, the first flight test of NASA's Orion capsule and Space Launch System rocket, launched Nov. 16, 2022, and is scheduled to splashdown Dec. 11.

This image shows the Milky Way as seen from the solar system. The shaded regions are those scanned by the Skylab experiment Galactic X-Ray Mapping (S150). The galactic center is approximately at the center of the map. The three overlapping rectangles illustrate the fields of view of the three collimators in one instant of time. The Marshall Space Flight Center had program responsibility for the development of Skylab hardware and experiments.

First Photo Of Live Atomic Reactor -- This is a picture of the inside of a live atomic reactor, published today by the magazine Scientific American. The camera was placed by remote control and the picture was made while the reactor was immersed in water. The walls of the reactor are deep purple and there are light blue rays at the bottom. On June 26, 1959, then-Langley-research Francis Rogallo examined the Rogallo wing in the 7x10 FT Tunnel. Metal droplet levitated inside the Electrostatic Levitator (ESL). The ESL uses static electricity to suspend an object (about 2-3 mm in diameter) inside a vacuum chamber while a laser heats the sample until it melts. This lets scientists record a wide range of physical properties without the sample contacting the container or any instruments, conditions that would alter the readings. The Electrostatic Levitator is one of several tools used in NASA's microgravity materials science program.

National Physical Laboratory- Science and Technology in Wartime, Teddington, Middlesex, England, UK, 1944 In the Ship Research Department at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, tests are being carried out on a propeller in a Lithgow tunnel. The propeller can be seen through the inspection window built into the upper arm of the tunnel. According to the original caption, 'water is circulating at controlled velocity and pressure and the behaviour of the propeller is examined. Much of the work carried out with the Lithgow tunnel concerns problems of caviation in marine propellers'.

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover caught its own shadow in this image taken just after completing a drive of 329 feet (100.3 meters) on the 547th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's work on Mars (Feb. 18, 2014).

A "suited" test subject on the Reduced Gravity Walking Simulator located in the hanger at Langley Research Center. The initial version of this simulator was located inside the hanger. Later a larger version would be located at the Lunar Landing Facility. The purpose of this simulator was to study the subject while walking, jumping or running. Researchers conducted studies of various factors such as fatigue limit, energy expenditure, and speed of locomotion. Francis B.
