KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- After technicians removed and replaced all of the 32 bearings located in the JEL (jacking, equalization and leveling) cylinders and reinstalled the 16 cylinders on Crawler Transporter No. 2, workers take the crawler for a test run. During routine inspections, technicians found cracks in some of the bearings in the 16 JEL cylinders on the vehicle. There are 16 cylinders and 32 bearings per crawler.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, Mobile Launcher Platform-3 (MLP), which supported space shuttle Atlantis for its final flight to the International Space Station on the STS-135 mission, has been delivered to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) atop a crawler-transporter. For more than 40 years, the MLPs have traveled between the massive VAB to both launch pads at Launch Complex 39, and then returned to the VAB for future use. MLP-3 was first used to launch Columbia on the STS-32 mission on Jan. 9, 1990.

On the surface of the Moon, mining robots like the Pilot Excavator will excavate the regolith and take the material to a processing plant where usable elements such as hydrogen, oxygen and water can be extracted for life support systems. The Pilot Excavator can scoop up icy regolith which can be used to make operations on the Moon sustainable.
