Bust-Length Study of a Bearded Man with Cap in Three-Quarter View. Artist: Jacopo Bassano (Jacopo da Ponte) (Italian, Bassano del Grappa ca. 1510-1592 Bassano del Grappa). Dimensions: 5 1/4 x 4 1/2in. (13.3 x 11.4cm). Date: 1510-92.Jacopo Bassano was among the most innovative painters at the end of the sixteenth century. This intimate portraitlike study in color is a textbook example of Bassano's celebrated naturalism and dazzlingly economic pastel technique. This characteristic drawing, depicting a frequent head type in his canvases, was preparatory for an onlooker on the right in the Miracle of Saint Peter Curing the Cripple (private collection), a connection that had been unnoticed prior to its acquisition by the Museum. Similar head types turn up in the altarpiece of the Glory of Paradise, painted by Jacopo around 1580 for the Church of the Capuchins in Bassano (Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa). Head of a Bearded Man. Artist: Giovanni Serodine (Italian, Rome 1600-1630 Rome). Dimensions: 19-7/16 x 14-1/16 in. (49.4 x 35.7 cm). Date: 1600-1630.Here, the artist focused on the humble man's quiet dignity of character with a portrait-like precision. This monumental study in color is also striking for the immediacy of its brushwork, revealing Serodine's artistic roots in the naturalistic tradition of the region of Lombardy, in northwestern Italy. The present study is apparently the only work on paper by Giovanni Serodine, who was among the innovative Italian Baroque painters of religious genre scenes. Born in Rome of Lombard parents, Serodine was much influenced by Caravaggio (1571-1610), the brilliant master who also hailed from Lombardy, and who especially inspired a generation of painters working in Rome between 1610 and 1630. Crito ca. 1786-87 Jacques Louis David French This highly finished drawing is a study for David's Death of Socrates (31.45), which hangs in the Metropolitan's European Paintings Galleries. The painting depicts the philosopher in prison in 399 BC. Sentenced to death for corrupting the youth of Athens, he pauses to address his followers before drinking the hemlock. This sheet is a study for the pose and drapery of Crito, a wealthy Athenian disciple who, in the painting, sits by Socrates' side and beseeches him not to drink the poison. The grid drawn in black chalk, known as squaring, would have assisted the artist in transferring the design from paper to canvas.
