Like other Orientalist painters, Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant blended European misconceptions and fantasies of North Africa and the Middle East with intricate renderings of props he gathered on a trip to Spain and Morocco. The dramatic subject, lavish interior, and sparkling colors of this painting were designed to mirror European consumers exoticizing fantasies of the region. Several decorative elements may be based on objects in Constants studio. The golden curtain, ewer, stool, and architectural backdrop are similar to props photographed there in 1890. Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.

Gustav Bauernfeind (1848-1904) was a German Orientalist painter. After his first visit to Jaffa and Jerusalem in 1880-81, he traveled widely in the Middle East, particularly to the Holy Land and Damascus, eventually settling in Jerusalem where he died in 1904.

Dressing for the Carnival 1877 Winslow Homer American Painted at the end of Reconstructionmarked by the final withdrawal of federal troops from the SouthHomer’s challenging subject evokes both the dislocation and endurance of African American culture that was a legacy of slavery. The central figure represents a Jonkonnu character, a Christmas holiday celebration once observed by enslaved Blacks in Virginia and North Carolina. Rooted in the culture of the British West Indies, the festival blended African and English traditions. After the Civil War, aspects were incorporated into Independence Day events, to which the painting’s original title, "Sketch4th of July in Virginia," referred.
