Date: 1548-49.This design for a candlestick was made by the French artist Jacques Androuet Du Cerceau who was a proliferous designer of architecture, ornament and the decorative arts. His style and works are mainly known through the prints and books he produced and published in Orléans. In his works he combines French and Italian elements into heavily ornate designs which were very popular at the time. In 1548-1549 he published a series of candlestick designs of which three are known today. This design contains several classical elements which are most likely based directly on Italian examples. The base, for example, seems to have been inspired by a drawing by Giulio Romano. The curled-up ornaments in the layer above the lion's feet are motifs particular to France however and relate back

Design for a Candelabrum. Artist: Edgar George Papworth Sr. (British, London 1809-1866 London). Dimensions: sheet: 17 1/2 x 9 3/4 in. (44.5 x 24.8 cm). Date: ca. 1826-37.Edgar George Papworth Sr. was born into a family of noted stucco artists. He himself trained to become a sculptor, although he never appears to have become very successful in his trade. This design for a candelabrum most likely dates from his formative years, made either during his time studying at the Royal Academy (1827-1834) or the subsequent years he spent in Italy on a scholarship granted by the same institute. The design brings to mind Antique and classicizing designs for candelabra as they were published by Giovanni Battista Piranesi in his influential series Vasi, candelabra, cippi, sarcophagi (...) (Vases, candelabra, grave stones sarcophagi (...)), which was published in Rome in 1778. The inclusion of the two birds specifically recalls one of two candelabra by Piranesi which are now kept in the Ashmolean Mus

Paris paper etching / engraving pedestal of a piece of sculpture (perhaps in the form of a herm). ornament ~ festoon, garland. ornament ~ medallion

The circular bowl is supported by lion feet, two are visible upon two plinths. From the feet rise volutes with cherubim on top. In the center, above the front, is a bowknot from which hang a circular medallion with the representation of the baptism of Christ, and festoons toward the below the cherubim. The lif is framed by a round base, with a group of sitting and kneeling angels upon clouds together supporting a high chalice with the host hovering above it. Usual background. Date: ca. 1775. Pen and brown ink, brush and brown wash on lined off-white laid paper. Museum: Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
