Pendant Design with Faith Standing in a Circular Temple before 1573 Jan Collaert I Netherlandish Vertical panel with a pendant design at center, decorated with the personification of Faith standing in a circular temple, surrounded by a flower-arabesque pattern. The ornament hangs from a ribbon and has three pearls descending from the lower arms. At bottom left and right, heart-shaped ornaments that may have been designs for earrings or buttons. From a set of ten plates with pendant designs, five of which show deities in niches. Four designs in the series are decorated exclusively with ornate flower-arabesques and are most likely designs for pendant versos. This plate belongs to the first edition, published by Hans I Liefrinck in Antwerp before 1573. Date: ca. 1750-55.Demarteau, the son of a Liege gunsmith, was apprenticed under the Parisian engraver De Lacollombe, who is known chiefly for his designs for firearms ornament. These prints, part of a set of nineteen, come from Demarteau's only pattern book devoted solely to firearms decoration. From the 1750s onward, Demarteau established himself as one of the most successful engravers of his generation and was renowned for perfecting the technique en manière de crayon, which allowed prints to simulate the appearance and subtlety of chalk drawings.
