Four-Cornered Hat 7th-9th century Wari Finely woven, brightly colored hats, customarily featuring a square crown, four sides, and four pointed tips, are most frequently associated with two ancient cultures of the Andes: the Wari and the Tiwanaku. The Wari Empire dominated the south-central highlands and the west coastal regions of what is now Peru from 500-1000 A.D. The Tiwanaku occupied the altiplano (high plain) directly south of Wari-populated areas around the same time, including territory now part of the modern country of Bolivia. The cultures not only developed and flourished as contemporaries, but also occupied adjacent lands for nearly four centuries. A Wari ceremonial center called Cerro Baúl was located a mere five miles from Tiwanaku-settled fields in the Moquegua Valley of Peru. Pair of Gauntlets ca. 1585 Italian, Milan These small gauntlets belong to an armor for foot tournament made for the seven-year-old heir to the Spanish throne, the future Philip III (1578-1621, king from 1598). The decoration is typically Milanese, with bands of chiseled and gold-damascened trophy and grotesque ornament outlined with silver dots. Hat (laket), Early 1900s. Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kuba peoples, Early 20th century. Raffia and dye; overall: 11.4 x 16.2 x 16.2 cm (4 1/2 x 6 3/8 x 6 3/8 in.). Titled Kuba men and prominent women wear the laket, a small ornate dome-shaped hat. An essential fashion item of adult men in good social standing, it focuses special attention on the head as a significant marker of individual identity, ethnic affiliation, status, and role in society. This prestige object is secured on the crown of the head with a nine-and-a-half-inch metal pin that pierces through the hat onto a clump of hair. The laket is made from raffia palm fiber coiled into threads and woven in two alternating patterns and contrasting light and dark (dyed) wefts. There are two examples of the laket: the plain type with the flat top, and the more elaborate type called the laket mishiing.

Cape of black bobbin with bouquet on the back, anonymous, c. 1860 - c. 1870 Cape of black bobbin: Chantilly side. The Cape has a pressed triangular shape with rounded points, with a wide strip at the bottom that has been wrinkled and at the top a narrow strip that has been laid in the right shape with some large figures. In the middle of the back, a large bouquet is central to a symmetrical pattern with loose flower branches where a zigzag pendulum runs in between. The wide-ranged strip along the bottom has a scrap edge that is made up of large C-Voluten, which averted from each other a kind of horns of abundance forms from which flower branches spring. The pattern of the narrow strip along the top consists of loose flower branches in oval cartouches of pearl lists. The motifs are connected by a Maas soil. The motifs are made in netslag and one type of decorative land has been used, thicker contour threads run around the motifs. The Cape can be closed with a cost ribbon and buttons unk

Picture Frame, 1910, 8 3/8 x 6 3/8 x 5/8 in. (21.27 x 16.19 x 1.59 cm) (without dangles or hanger), Beads, cotton, paper, sequins, United States, 20th century, As photography became more accessible in the late 1800's, picture frame whimsies became desirable items of home décor. Often beaded with three-dimensional flowers and other motifs, picture frames illustrate the broad pallet artists employed to make these pieces. They fashioned patterns for designs and passed their templates along to younger artists in the family. Younger women and girls first learned how to bead the looped fringe and would later bead entire whimsies. By creating them in this way, Iroquois women insured the survival and growth of their artistic traditions.
