Textile Panel with Birds amid Flowering Vines first half 17th century The interlocking pattern of this silk panel features a popular bird-and-flower motif that alternates direction in each repeated row. The effect of achieving a borderless repeat is a challenge confronting textile designers in the planning phases of the design, and indicates great skill when executed as flawlessly as in this panel. Enhanced with foil-wrapped metal threads covering the ground cloth, bird-and-flower textiles produced in the seventeenth century feature a soft palette of pistachio green and safflower orange that was highly susceptible to fading. The overall shape of this piece indicates that it was used as a chasuble, a sleeveless Christian vestment, attesting to the popularity and status of this type of textile in Europe.. Panel of velvet second half 15th century Italian During the early fifteenth century, European velvet design was largely characterized by the use of voided patterns formed where the pile was absent. In the second half of the century, technical innovations led to the production of increasingly complex velvets in which the richness of design and texture were achieved through the use of different heights of cut pile and of supplementary metal threads. Tent panel, Medium: cotton Technique: mordant painted and dyed (chintz) on tabby weave, Large tent panel with an architectural form, characteristic of Islamic art, of a a pointed, lobed arch within a frame, suggesting the mihrab or prayer niche. Within this frame a symmetrical, balanced pattern shows a slender vase, from which spring branches ending in blossoms; a second slender vase emerging from the first, holds a second cluster of flowers, which almost touch the curved top of the arch. At the base, the vase is supported by a rudimentary hillock, at either side of the vase grow long pointed leaves, and at either corner rise slender branches, from similar small mounds, on which appear fruits or seed pods and flowers. The background color is a dark reddish-brown, and on this the main design is enlivened by a secondary pattern of many small leaf sprays or curling waves, reserved in the white of the cloth, which appear throughout among the branches. Silk Curtain 15th century Contemporary accounts and material evidence describe the extensive use of luxurious silk curtainssuch as this oneto furnish the wealthy households of medieval Spain, but few such textiles have survived intact. Our piece is one of only four known extant curtains. Given the strong tradition of drawloom weaving in both Spain and North Africa from the fifteenth century onward, it is difficult to apply a specific attribution to this beautifully woven curtain. A related pair of silk curtains, however, have been tentatively assigned to the Nasrid period and associated with Granada based on their inscriptionswhich comprise phrases appearing throughout the stuccowork of the Alhambra palace.. Cravat end late 17th century French The lavish use of expensive Venetian laces at the court of Louis XIV convinced his finance minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, to establish a competing French lace industry. The term point de France originally referred to both needle and bobbin lace made in France, but eventually became synonymous with French needle lace characterized by a hexagonal background mesh covered with buttonhole stitches and embellished with tiny projections known as picots.
