Double Frontispiece for the Kolliat, 16th century, 10 7/8 x 11 3/4 in. (27.62 x 29.85 cm) (image, sheet), Colors and gold on paper, Iran, 16th century, This sumptuous double frontispiece has survived from a Kolliat manuscript originally written by the great Persian poet Sa'di. Illuminated opening pages such as these are typical of the ornate chapter headings, embellished script, and marginal decorations that frequently graced the Koran and other religious manuscripts, as well as literary classics. The decoration consists of a wide floral arabesque framing the central rectangular unit, which is, in turn, divided into three fields by braided and floral bands. Each of these units bears inscriptions in ornate cursive script. These two pages demonstrate a highly developed sense of design and an extraordinary virtuosity in the application of colors and gold leaf.

Tile with Niche Design dated A.H. 860/A.D. 1455-56 Nusrat al-Din Muhammad Arabic Inscription: "In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate. The building of this structure was ordered by the supreme Sultan Abu Anbiyya al-Muzaffar Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan, May God perpetuate his kingdom. Nusrat al-Din Muhammad wrote this in the year 860/1455-56." Along with two calligraphic frieze tiles in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum displaying similar floral designs, this luster tile once adorned an as?yet?unidentified building commissioned by Abu Sa'id (1424-69), great?grandson of Timur. From the inscription on this small tile, we learn not only the name of the patron, and the date of the building’s construction, but also the name of the tile’s calligrapher—Nusrat al?Din Muhammad.. Detailed panel work from a Minbar for the Sultan Qa'ithbay; Egypt, probably Cairo 1468-96 A.D. A Minbar, or pulpit, is used for sermons delivered during the midday prayer on Friday, the main service of the week. Several woodworking techniques were used to decorate this Minbar. Most striking are the panels assembled from hundreds of small, carefully shaped pieces of wood. Carved ivory elements highlight the geometric designs.
