Date: ca. 1330-40.The people of Irman (Armenia) complained to the shah about a plague of ferocious and destructive wild boars. Bizhan, an impetuous young hero, volunteered to rid the forest of them. Here, the artist has departed from the text of the poem by showing Bizhan on foot (forgetting, however, that the young man should not have facial hair), with the result of enhancing the danger and drama of the encounter. "Zal in the Simurgh's Nest", Folio from a Shahnama (Book of Kings) ca. 1330-40 Abu'l Qasim Firdausi Left in the wilderness as a baby because his father Sam thought his white hair was an attribute of the devil, Zal was rescued by the Simurgh and taken to her nest on Mt. Elburz. Rumors eventually reached Sam, who came to reclaim his son and to thank the great bird. In spite of the damage to the lower right hand portion of this stepped composition, the painting is striking, with the youth crouched in his mountain home talking to his foster mother while his repentant father bows to the ground in homage and gratitude to the Simurgh. The hares in the composition emphasize the remoteness of the setting. Here, the Simurgh has not yet taken the pictorial form of the Chinese phoenix as it had by this time in the more prominent artistic centers.. "Jonah and the Whale", Folio from a Majma' al-Tavarikh (Compendium of Histories) of Hafiz-i Abru. Author: Hafiz-i Abru (d. 1430). Dimensions: H. 16 3/4 in. (42.5 cm)W. 13 1/8 in. (33.3 cm). Date: ca. 1425.Written by court historian Hafiz-i Abru and modelled after the Ilkhanid Jami' al-Tavarikh, the text of the Majma al-Tavarikh begins at the time of Adam and continues into the rule of Shah Rukh (r. 1405-47). In this scene, Jonah crouches in the foliage on the bank of a body of water, which was painted in silver and has since oxidized, making it appear dark grey in color. This manuscript, which was originally composed of 407 folios including 150 miniatures, remained intact until at least 1928. It had a leather binding, and its paintings were executed in three different styles. The Metropolitan Museum owns ten folios from the manuscript. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

In the first centuries after the advent of Islam, Arabic calligraphyalluding to the written word of Godwas one of the main characteristics distinguishing the art of Islam from that of the preceding Byzantines and Sasanians in the Near East. In sixteenth-century Iran, calligraphy was a highly revered art form, visible in the public sphere in architectural inscriptions and, in more private and exclusive circles, collected by the court and wealthy elite to be assembled and enjoyed in albums. Samples such as the one shown here were often embellished with stylized floral and leaf patterns rendered in colorful pigments and gilding, remounted into beautifully ornamented and gilded margin papers, and bound together in albums and anthologies of poetry. On the basis of the tightly wound turban with a thick bulge in front and a fanned end with flowers on a gold ground the painting can be dated to the 1690's or early eighteenth century. A signature would have appeared in the faintly visible cartouche beneath the horse's belly but it has faded into illegibility. The style of the work with the lightly painted villages and mountains in the background recalls works of the 1690s signed by Muhammad Zaman. The bold nasta'liq calligraphy mounted above and below the painting is signed by 'Ali Riza 'Abbasi, the director of the library of Shah 'Abbas (r. 1587-1629). Museu
