Niccolò Paganini (1784-1840) ca. 1830 Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French Ingres prepared this drawing especially for his close friend Luigi Calamatta, who produced a crayon-manner engraving based on it in 1830 (17.3.756-2183). Ingres probably met the sitter, violinist Niccolò Paganini, in April 1819, perhaps during a recital for Prince Wenzel von Kaunitz-Rietberg, the Austrian ambassador in Rome. The French painter was already acquainted with the ambassadors family, having portrayed his three young daughters in 1818 in another graphite drawing in the collection (1998.21). It was in this Roman context that Ingres created his earliest known portrait drawing of Paganini (Musée du Louvre RF 4381), signing his name and recording the date 1819. The Metropolitan drawing seems to have been traced from this Louvre version more than a decade later. Portrait of Jonathan Richardson, Junior, the artist's son 1729 Jonathan Richardson Sr. British Jonathan Richardson Senior was a leading early eighteenth-century portrait painter who also wrote influential texts on art and connoisseurship and formed an important collection of Old Master drawings. At the outset of his career he rarely made preparatory studies, but in his fifties he began regularly to portray himself and his son in works that suggest an appreciation for drawing as an aesthetic pursuit. Once he retired from painting, Richardson continued to make such drawings daily. This example dates to 1729, when Richardson was sixty-four and his subject thirty-eight. Rendered close to life size, the sitter is dressed informally in a soft turban and open-necked shirt and robe. His somber features have been described using red, white, and black chalk, with a middle tone established by the paper. The original blue of the sheet has survived in remarkably fine condition..
