(76.52 x 62.87 x 1.91 cm) (panel), Oil on panel, Italy, 16th century, Silvestro Aldobrandini (1499-1558) was a distinguished jurist who taught law at the University of Pisa and held public office in the city-state of Florence. In 1530, when the powerful Medici banking family regained control of Florence, Aldobrandini was exiled. He remained a politically involved lawyer and eventually was employed by the pope. He died in Rome in 1558. Ghirlandaio shows him dressed with severe elegance in black, holding a letter. The ring on his index finger clearly displays the Aldobrandini coat of arms.

This painting, titled 'The Sculptor,' is by Andrea del Sarto, an Italian painter from Florence who was born in 1486 and died in 1531. One of the most haunting portraits of the Italian school, it was long supposed to be the portrait of Del Sarto himself. It display's the master's art in its most perfect form. It is housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Portrait of Joris van Egmond. From the inscription on the original frame, we know that this is a portrait of the nobleman Joris van Egmond. He found favour with Emperor Charles V and in 1535 became Bishop of Utrecht. Van Egmond was an important patron to artists, including Van Scorel, who painted his protector on a panel of exceptionally wide format.

Portrait of a Man, Said to be Christopher Columbus (born about 1446, died 1506) 1519 Sebastiano del Piombo (Sebastiano Luciani) Italian Painted in Rome by one of the outstanding Venetian masters of the High Renaissance, this badly damaged portrait purports to show Christopher Columbus. The inscription identifies him as "the Ligurian Colombo, the first to enter by ship into the world of the Antipodes 1519," but the writing is not entirely trustworthy and the date 1519 means that it cannot have been painted from life, as Columbus died in 1506. There are other, quite different, portraits that also claim to show Columbus. Nonetheless, from an early date our picture became the authoritative likeness. Richard Pocoke (1704-1765) was born at Southampton, some time in the year 1704. After having received a classical education, and acquired a knowledge of several oriental languages, he visited France and Italy; and in 1736, he set out on an expedition to the east. He travelled extensively in Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Turkey, returning to England in 1741. In 1743 he published, in one folio volume, an account of his travels, with maps and plates, under the title 'A Description of the East, and some other Countries', which was succeeded by two other volumes of the same size. He died in 1765.

Hermann von Wedigh III (died 1560) 1532 Hans Holbein the Younger German During his second sojourn in England (1532-43) Holbein made portraits for a new clientele, the German merchants of the Hanseatic League, whose guildhall was located in the London Steelyard. The sitter, whose ring displays the arms of the Wedighs of Cologne, is probably Hermann von Wedigh III, portrayed at age twenty-nine. The Latin quotation on the sheet of paper in the foreground, reading "Truth breeds hatred," comes from a Roman comedy popular among Humanists, Andria by Terence.
