This painting depicts Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), who began working closely with Edouard Manet around 1868. She married Manet's brother Eugéne in 1874. Manet painted Morisot's portrait several times, at first presenting her in static poses with neatly styled hair. About 1872 he began painting her in more momentary, fleeting states. In this painting she appears to be moving, her hair disheveled as she throws a furtive glance to the side. Manet's sketchy brushwork gives the painting a daring unfinished look, suggesting the tempo of modern life. Morisot's pensive, nervous expression suggests that Manet was sympathetic to her struggle for recognition at a time when women were not expected to pursue professional careers. Bessie Potter ca. 1895 William Merritt Chase American Bessie Potter (1872-1955) was born in Saint Louis and studied in Chicago. She earned a reputation as a sculptor of statuettes in bronze that portray intimate feminine subjects. In 1899, she married the painter Robert Vonnoh and lived in New York, where she and her husband undoubtedly knew Chase. In this portrait, Chase captures Potter's sensitive but reserved personality. Her pose and the soft turban that she wears recall those in a self-portrait (1790; Uffizi, Florence) by the French painter Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun (1755-1842), whom Potter apparently admired.. Mrs. Whaley (died 1798, Isle of Man) Attributed to George Chinnery The sitter's maiden name was Maria Courtney but for some seven or eight years before her death in 1798 in Douglas, Isle of Man, she was known as Mrs. Whaley. She was the constant companion of a wealthy and dissolute young Irishman, Thomas, or Buck, Whaley, by whom she had four children: Thomas, Richard, Ann, and Sophia Isabella. They lived in a house Buck Whaley built on the Isle of Man, where this portrait may have hung in the dining room. The coloring is sober and autumnal and the figure quite withdrawn. Here, a young beauty is absorbed in nothing more consequential than pinning a bauble or blossom to the low neckline of her elegant evening gown. The skirts sinuous striped pattern, the curves at the knees and shoulders, and the contour of the upswept hair justify the description of Alexander as “the painter of the flowing line.” His dazzling brushwork is especially notable in the rendering of the rich fabrics and in the otherwise plain background..
