Aviation in Britain Before the First World War A good medium close up of the passenger accommodation on Cody aircraft mark IIE (Omnibus - so named because of its passenger carrying capabilities) - four tractor seats. Cody first built this aircraft in 1910; the previous aircraft had been in several crashes and was suffering generally from constant usage. The design of this aircraft followed similar lines to the previous one though the wingspan was shorter by around six feet and the wing area around a third smaller. The mark IIE was fitted an Austro-Daimler engine with an output of 120 hp was fitted. It was two Green engines with the same combined output of 120 hp that Cody originally intended to use when he designed and built the mark II though problems with synchronicity meant that this was never carried out and instead just one of these engines was used meaning that aircraft was underpowered though alterations to the engine and the removal of excess weight partly solved this problem.

Matthews, an instructor at the London Flying Club, is leaving Croydon at dawn to-morrow in an attempt to break Bert Hinkckler's records flight to Australia. There are also four other pilots making the attempt and they will compete in a friendly race to Australia. Mr. Matthews taught Army Johnson to fly. September 16, 1930.

Testing Human 'Stop' Resistance -- This rocket-propelled railway vehicle is being used by the Air Fore to find out how much deceleration shock the human body can endure. The vehicle attains a speed of 150 m.p.h., then is braked to 75 m.p. h. in one fifth of a second. Test results will belt in developing crash protection equipment plane crews. The train ferry Skåne

A Republic F-84 Thunderjet dramatically modified at the NASA Lewis Research Center to investigate the use of slotted nozzles to reduce exhaust noise. The F-84 was a single-seat fighter-bomber powered by an Allison J35 turbojet. It was the Air Forces first post-World War II tactical aircraft and was used extensively in the Korean War. The laboratory had acquired the aircraft in 1954 and modified it in order to demonstrate the reverse thruster. The tail end of the aircraft was then removed for a series of large nozzle investigations. Lewis researchers launched an extensive program in the mid-1950s to develop methods of reducing engine noise as the airline industry was preparing to introduce the first turbojet-powered passenger aircraft. The early NACA investigations determined that the primary source of noise was the mixing of the engines hot exhaust with the cool surrounding air. Lewis researchers studied many different nozzles designed to facilitate this mixing. Nozzles with elongate
