Saint Paul ca. 1510 Michele da Verona The figure of Saint Paul is depicted in a viewpoint known as di sotto in su (seen from below), evident in the foreshortening of the face and feet, suggesting that this drawing was a study for a painted work intended to be placed above the viewer. The sheet was formerly considered to be a study for a painting attributed to Francesco Morone, Saint Paul Between Saints Denis and Mary Magdalene, in the Church of SantAnastasia in Verona. However, the resemblance is now considered to be indicative of the stylistic similarities between Francesco Morone and Michele da Verona, both of whom were influenced by Francescos father, Domenico. The grayish-brown tones, together with the voluminous folds of drapery articulated with highlights, create a sculptural effect.. Saint Paul 459429

Two Evangelists.Starnina was a widely travelled artist who developed an elegant and highly coloured style in Spain. After he returned to Florence in 1403, his work exerted a profound influence on the artistic development of Lorenzo Monaco and other Florentine painters. These two panels, which are in excellent condition, probably served as wings of a large altarpiece.

Madonna and Child with Angels. Artist: Gentile da Fabriano (Gentile di Niccol di Giovanni di Massio) (Italian, Umbrian, active by 1408-died 1427). Dimensions: 33 3/4 x 20 in. (85.7 x 50.8 cm).Although badly damaged, this picture is a rare work by one of the greatest painters of the early fifteenth century. Gentile was born in the town of Fabriano, in the Marches, but his work was in demand from Milan to Rome. He painted this work in Venice, where together with Pisanello he was engaged in the decoration of the Doges Palace. It may be the center of an altarpiece, since the child turns as though to bless an unseen figure. As Queen of Heaven, the Virgin is seated on a throne; the plants that have overgrown it allude to her humility (humus, the latin root of humble, means earth). Astonishing at this date--ca. 1410--is the delicate naturalism of the child, the attentive description of the plants, and the rythmic folds of the drapery, which confer an effect of incipient movement.
