Alexander the Great or Hector of Troy (from the Nine Heroes Tapestries) ca. 1400-1410 South Netherlandish This tapestry is part of four hangings that have been reconstructed from what originally was a set of three tapestries depicting the Nine (or Ten) Worthies. The heroes depicted included King Arthur, Joshua, David, Hector of Troy, and Julius Caesar, along with various attendants. One of the reconstructed hangings (32.130.2b, 47.101.1, 47.152) shows two of the three Hebrew Worthies in their settings and with nearly all of their attendant figures. Another represents King Arthur (32.130.2a, 47.101.4), one of the three or possibly four figures that appeared in the original tapestry devoted to the Christian Worthies, together with some attendant figures. The third and fourth pieces represent respectively Hector of Troy (47.101.2) and Julius Caesar (47.101.3), with attendant, taken from a third tapestry that depicted the three Pagan Worthies. . In a round temple stands on a tiled floor, in the middle of a column with the god image a knight assisted by two squares. On his Maliënkolder, the inscription is on the skirt: Hercules. Hercules supports his arm on the head of one of the thiral skirts. He has lifted the other arm. Hercules and the wealth wear a flat bonnet of red with stored edge. The back wall has rastered windows and hooks hang on the left a coat of arms and a helmet. The blue dome roof has a lucarne with two side towers with pinacles, a canopy forming in front of the god image, which has been presented as a seated, bearded man in long red-ocher overweight. Left and right the flattened bow is supported by columns with red and blue-painted curry carving, who are asked by marbled bundled columns of red and blue stripes, whose leaf capitals kneeled trestle fighters of red and ocher yellow.

Pedanius Dioscorides (Greek: ed sd; circa 40—90 AD) was a Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, the author of a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine and related medicinal substances (a pharmacopeia), that was widely read for well more than a thousand years. A native of Anazarbus, Cilicia, Asia Minor, Dioscorides practiced in Rome at the time of Nero. He was a surgeon with the army of the emperor, so he had the opportunity to travel extensively, seeking medicinal substances (plants and minerals) from all over the Roman and Greek world.

Allegorical Tapestry with Sages of the Past ca. 1480-1500 German The two sections, originally conjoined, feature standing figures paired as if in conversation. Represented, from left to right, are Saints Thomas Aquinas, Bernhard, Augustine, Job, Cato (the younger), and Seneca, each identified in a titulus above. The figures stand on free-floating consoles. Judging from two other fragments that share the same designs, the hanging originally had at least twelve figures drawn from diverse ages and sources, including antiquity, the Hebrew Bible, histories, and popular culture. The quatrains in the inscribed banderoles are taken from the poem Practical Wisdom written by the 13th-century poet Freidank and preserved in a handful of Upper Rhenish/Swabian manuscripts dating to the 1460s and 70s. Collectively, these erudite figures form an allegorical compendium of late medieval learning and related moral and spiritual values.
