The Crucifixion with Saints and a Donor. Artist: Joos van Cleve (Netherlandish, Cleve ca. 1485-1540/41 Antwerp) and a collaborator. Dimensions: Shaped top: central panel, painted surface 38 3/4 x 29 1/4 in. (98.4 x 74.3 cm); each wing, painted surface 39 3/4 x 12 7/8 in. (101 x 32.7 cm). Date: ca. 1520.In this splendid triptych the talents of a landscape specialist have been combined with those of the figurative painter Joos van Cleve. The setting for the Crucifixion, witnessed by the Virgin, Saint John and the donor with his patron Saint Paul, is a vast landscape whose style is indebted to Joachim Patinir (represented in the adjacent gallery). The panoramic vista unifies the interior. On the left wing are Saints John the Baptist and Catherine, on the right Anthony of Padua and Nicholas of Tolentino. The latter two suggest that the altarpiece was an Italian commission. The frame is original but regilt. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Chess Players ca. 1475 Liberale da Verona Italian This and its companion panel are from the front of a chest (cassone) and show two episodes from an as yet unidentified story, or novella. In one, a youth is smitten by a maiden who appears at a window. In the other, they engage in an erotically charged game of chess (she is about to lose). Both were common themes in the amatory literature of the Renaissance. The figures bleached blond, frizzy hair was the height of fashion in fifteenth-century Siena. Liberale was a brilliant illuminator and worked on choirbooks in Siena between 1467 and 1476.. The Chess Players 436884

The Feast of Herod and the Beheading of the Baptist ca. 1330-35 Giovanni Baronzio One of the most important surviving examples of fourteenth-century painting from Rimini (on Italys Adriatic coast), this panel was one of eight scenes depicting the life of Saint John the Baptist from a now-dismembered altarpiece. Riminese painters of the first half of the fourteenth century were indebted to Giotto, who worked in the city in the early years of the century. This dramatic scene unfolds in the palace of King Herod (crowned and seated at the table), who is so enchanted by the dancing of his stepdaughter, Salome (dressed in red and white in the foreground), that he grants her any wish. Prompted by her mother, Queen Herodias, Salome requests the head of Saint John the Baptist, which she presents to her on a platter. The Adoration of the Magi. Artist: Sano di Pietro (Ansano di Pietro di Mencio) (Italian, Siena 1405-1481 Siena). Dimensions: 11 7/8 x 18 3/4 in. (30.2 x 47.6 cm). Date: ca. 1470.Together with two scenes now in the Vatican, these panels formed the base (predella) of an altarpiece, possibly the <i>Presentation in the Temple</i> in the cathedral of Massa Marittima, south of Siena. Sano was a gifted painter of illuminations and these works share with his illuminations a pleasing, genial, if somewhat conservative, narrative style. Date: probably 1577.This unfinished sketch records one stage of Tintoretto's preparation of a large votive painting of Doge Alvise Mocenigo destined for a room (the Sala del Collegio) in the Doge's Palace in Venice. Mocenigo ruled at the time of Venice's great victory at sea over the Turks, the Battle at Lepanto of 1571, represented in the sketch by the ships in the background, and during the ferocious plague of 1576 (which killed the painter Titian), after which he pledged to build the great church of the Redentore designed by Palladio. In the sketch the artist mapped out the principal figures, including rudimentary ideas for the figure of Saint Mark to the left of the kneeling Doge, and painted the silhouette of the saint's lion on a dark ground in the lower left.
