Panel from a Casket with Scenes from Courtly Romances, 1330. France, Lorraine, Gothic period, 14th century. Ivory; overall: 9.7 x 25.9 x 0.8 cm (3 13/16 x 10 3/16 x 5/16 in.). Among the most lavish and deluxe products of French ivory workshops of the 1300s were large caskets carved with elaborate scenes drawn from courtly romances. This panel shown here comes from such a casket. This side panel depicts scenes such as Sir Gawain and the Lion and Lancelot crossing the sword bridge. These images suggesting chivalry, fertility, virginity, youth, and an idealized courtly love likely derive from manuscripts including the Roman de la Rose and the poems of Chrétien de Troyes. Such texts were often found within the libraries of the aristocracy, so the casket’s symbolic images would have been readily understood. Such caskets may have originally been gifts between a man and a woman. The expense of the material, ivory, suggests they were produced for an elite, aristocratic clientele.

Daniel, Archbishop of Mainz 1568 Master HKVB The subject, Daniel Brendel of Homberg, archchancellor of the Holy Roman Empire for Germany, was prince elector and archbishop of Mainz and primate of the Roman Catholic Church of the countries north of the alpine mountains from 1555 to 1582. The inscription mentions that he was forty-six years old when this portrait was made and serves as a reminder of a faithful life by citing an abbreviated version of the Latin Bible: "In omnibus operibus tuis memorare novissima tua, et in aeternum non peccabis" (In all thy works be mindful of thy last end and thou wilt never sin; Eccles. 7:40). Date: 10th century.Probably originally part of a muqarnas, or stalactite squinch, this and other muqarnas elements would have been stacked, in descending size, in the upper corner of a room in order to make the transition to a dome. This, together with objects 38.40.249-38.40.251 are among the earliest known examples of muqarnas, a feature that became quite popular in Islamic architecture in subsequent centuries. The Institution of the Rosary 1585-1595 Italy. This relief panel shows Christ crowning the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven. Both figures are supported by angels; they are flanked by more angels holding rosaries, or strings of beads used to count prayers, in honor of the Virgin and celebrating events in her life. This bronze was probably fashioned by a Venetian artisan conversant with the relief style of Jacopo Sansovino, and thus it appears in a type of frame common for late-16th-century devotional works, complementing the stylized nature of the heavenly scene.. Among the most lavish and deluxe products of French ivory workshops of the 1300s were large caskets carved with elaborate scenes drawn from courtly romances. The panel shown here comes from such a casket. This side panel depicts scenes such as the fountain of youth and the unicorn hunt. These images suggesting chivalry, fertility, virginity, youth, and an idealized courtly love likely derive from manuscripts including the Roman de la Rose and the poems of Chrétien de Troyes. Such texts were often found within the libraries of the aristocracy, so the casket’s symbolic images would have been readily understood. Such caskets may have originally been gifts between a man and a woman. The expense of the material, ivory, suggests they were produced for an elite, aristocratic clientele.
