Date: 1600-1602.Agostino, the older brother of the more famous Annibale, first collaborated with their cousin Lodovico in their native Bologna, where the three founded an art academy that emphasized the study of nature. Today, Agostino is perhaps best known as the author of some two hundred prints. A fine painter and an accomplished printmaker, he traveled briefly to Venice and Parma and by 1598 was in Rome to assist his brother on frescoes in the Palazzo Farnese. The Lamentation of Christ (recto and verso) 1527-1535 Italy. This two-sided sheet features variations on the subject of the Lamentation of Christ, the period of mourning over Christís body after his crucifixion and before his resurrection. The drawingís most finished side is divided into three scenes. The dead Christ is mourned by his followers at center. His tomb is prepared for his burial at left, and the bodies of the good and bad thievesóthe two thieves who were crucified alongside Christóare carried away at upper right. The sheetís less-finished side contains a variation on the lamentation scene on the drawingís front.Although he was influenced by his master, Raphael, Polidoro later adopted a style of drawing in pen and ink characterized by reduced forms made of agitated strokes and rapid hatching, as seen here.. Adam and Eve Mourning the Death of Abel ca. 1576 Michiel Coxie (I) The majority of autograph drawings by Michiel Coxie, who was also active as a painter and print designer, relate to prints. This sheet served as the model for the final engraving in a series of three depicting the history of Cain and Abel, of which the first plate is dated 1576. An impression of this print by Johannes I Sadeler, published in Antwerp by Gerard de Jode, is present in the Museums collection (acc. 53.601.17(64)). The composition and figure style, inspired by both antique and contemporary Italian models, illustrate well why Coxie, who spent the 1530s in Rome, earned the nickname of the "Netherlandish Raphael". Yet the penwork reflects the bolder style developed by the artist in his later years, as also evident in a sheet, dated 1578 and signed in the same manner as the Museums example, at the Crocker Art Art Gallery, Sacramento (acc. 1871.109).
