The Deposition from the Cross is an altarpiece, completed in 1528, depicting the Deposition of Christ by the Italian Renaissance painter Jacopo Pontormo (May 24, 1494 ñ January 2, 1557), usually known as Jacopo da Pontormo, an Italian Mannerist painter of the Florentine School. Painted in oil on wood, the painting is located above the altar of the Capponi Chapel of the church of Santa Felicita in Florence.

The Unicorn Crosses a Stream (from the Unicorn Tapestries) 1495-1505 French (cartoon)/South Netherlandish (woven) According to tradition, the unicorn cannot be disturbed while performing a magical act. The attack by the hunters thus presumably begins soon after the action depicted in The Unicorn Is Found, and the scene is one filled with chaos and commotion. The ferocity of the battle is conveyed by the converging lances aimed at the animal, the sounding of the hunting horns, and the menacing hounds. Already wounded on his back, the unicorn leaps across a stream in a desperate attempt to escape his encircling enemies.The use of hounds to scout, chase, and eventually attack the quarry was typical practice in medieval stag hunts, and the palatial buildings in the background might be a further allusion to the hunt as a royal or aristocratic pastime. It's inspiration was the fifth book of <i>On the Nature of Things</i> by the Epicurean poet and philosopher Lucretius (ca. 99-55 B.C.). A manuscript of Lucretius's work was discovered in 1417 and published in Florence in 1471-73. Lucretius believed that the workings of the world and the evolution of humans can be accounted for by natural rather than divine causes, and he put forward a vision of the history of primitive man and the advent of civilization much discussed in Florentine intellectual circles. The master Venetian painter Titian (1477-1576) developed a sumptuous, coloristic style in the grand manner characteristic of the High Renaissance. This painting, oil on canvas, measures 5' 9' high by 6' 3' wide. It was painted between 1520 and 1523 and hangs in London's National Gallery. The title is 'Bacchus and Ariadne.' According to Greek mythology, Ariadne, the daughter of Minos, king of Crete, was deserted by the Greek hero Theseus, the white sails of his departing ship seen in the distance. Here she is surprised by the god of wine and merriment Bacchus and his followers (nymphs, fauns, satyrs) who are returning from a sacrifice. Smitten with love for Ariadne, Bacchuse leaps from his chariot to go to her. Above Ariadne is the constellation of Ariadne's crown, which Bacchus gave her as a present on their wedding.
