(36.5 x 23.5 cm). Date: ca. 1480.This perfectly preserved work is one of the artist's most exquisite pictures. Flemish painting may have inspired the remarkable precision of detail in the background, where turbaned figures (infidels) stroll. Trompe-l'oeil details are played against the doll-like prettiness of the Virgin. The apples and fly are symbols of sin and evil and are opposed to the cucumber and the goldfinch, symbols of redemption. Virgin and Child. The marble niche in which the Virgin and the Child are seated is a veritable sample-book of the modern Renaissance style. Pilasters and balusters, semi-circular alcoves, rams heads, cornucopias and scrolled acanthus leaves are typical of the new style, which was based on the architecture of Classical antiquity.

Virgin and Child ca. 1475-80 Hans Memling Netherlandish The composition of this small roundel of the Virgin suckling the Christ Child was very popular: it derives from a composition by Robert Campin that was disseminated through workshop patterns. Memling enriched the prototype by adding an extended wooded landscape. Roundels like this were often hung above the heads of beds, where they served as a blessing over a married couple or as a focus for personal prayer. Madonna and Child about 1450 Sano di Pietro (Ansano di Pietro di Mencio) Italian With their faces gently pressed together, the interaction between the Virgin and Christ Child evokes a tender intimacy. This motif appears in numerous works by Sano di Pietro and his workshop (for example, in another painting in the Lehman Collection, 1975.1.39). The particular manner of concealing the Christ Childs right cheek behind the Virgins face was probably inspired by a celebrated Madonna painted by the Sienese master Ambrogio Lorenzetti (Pinacoteca Nazionale, Siena). Sano was a popular and highly prolific Sienese painter and illuminator, whose workshop produced numerous devotional images of the Madonna and Child, frequently shown in bust-length. The close stylistic affinities between works attributed to Sano and the enigmatic Sienese artist known as the Osservanza Master may indicate that they represent a single artistic identity. Integral tondo molding mid-15th century Sienese This "Madonna and Child" by Sano di Pietro (1405-1481) retains its original frame carved in one with the panel. The molding is proportionally rather deep for the scale of the painting. The alternating blue and gilt blocks of the dentil that encircle the Virgin and Child like a halo of stars are due to the intervention of the restorer/faker Icilio Federico Joni, who described this panel and its companion in his biography of 1936. An identical roundel framed the "Stigmatization of Saint Francis" by Sano di Pietro, also owned by Giulio Grisaldi del Taia and then F. Mason Perkins in the early twentieth century.
