Saint Jerome 1630-1635 Italy. While he did produce a small number of etchings himself, Guido Reni nonetheless appreciated the possibilities offered by circulating his works via prints made in collaboration with other artists. Here Jerome appears more pensive and scholarly than in the nearby woodcut (1955.1070), made after a different Reni drawing, which shows him striking himself in the chest with a rock. While only Coriolano included an explicit halo, elegantly inscribed with the tan color block, both sheets movingly depict an impassioned saint striving for spiritual perfection in the wilderness.. The Expulsion from Paradise Made 1510 Netherlands. Because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, God expelled them from the Garden of Eden. Although Eveís sinful disobedience resulted in their exile from paradise, toil, and mortality, Lucas van Leyden sympathetically represented Eve as a mother, lovingly holding her infant son and gazing into his tiny face. This depiction of maternal love is reminiscent of contemporary images of the Madonna and Christ. The Holy Family (). Artist: Baccio Bandinelli (Italian, Gaiole in Chianti 1493-1560 Florence). Dimensions: 13-1/16 x 8-1/4 in. (33.2 x 21.0 cm). Date: 1488-1560.The Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli produced a number of pen and ink studies on the theme of the Holy Family (the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Christ Child), all drawn with his typically incisive clarity of contour and orderly hatching. However, the reclining Classical-style female figure with one bare breast (at center) is not easily reconciled with traditional portrayals of the Virgin Mary. Rather, the arrangement of the figures in the present drawing may be inspired on the many variations of pose seen in the family groups among the Ancestors of Christ in Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling frescoes (1508-12).
