Madonna and Child ca. 1508 Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) Italian Dating to about 1508, this devotional painting of the Madonna and Child is one of Titians earliest. Technical study has revealed that the artist first posed the figures sitting erect and in the center of the canvas, in a manner closer to those by Giovanni Bellini, the artist with whom he studied. The transparent cloth in which Mary places her son and the marble slab on which she is seated engage the beholder to meditate on Christs birth as well as his eventual fate. Its connection to the circle of painters collectively known as the Female Half-Lengths Group places the work in the context of the Antwerp pand, a market specifically devoted to the sale of art, whose popularity and success encouraged the production of paintings on speculation. Although her position is somewhat ambiguous in this image, the Virgin appears to be seated on the ground, emphasizing her humility as a model worthy of emulation. Albrecht Dürer (German: 21 May 1471 - 6 April 1528) was a German painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician, and theorist from Nuremberg. His high-quality woodcuts (nowadays often called Meisterstiche or 'master prints') established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance ever since. His vast body of work includes altarpieces and religious works, numerous portraits and self-portraits, and copper engravings. The woodcuts, such as the Apocalypse series (1498), retain a more Gothic flavour than the rest of his work. His well-known prints include the Knight, Death, and the Devil (1513), Saint Jerome in his Study (1514) and Melencolia I (1514), which has been the subject of extensive analysis and interpretation. His watercolours also mark him as one of the first European landscape artists, while his ambitious woodcuts revolutionized the potential of that medium.
