The Holy Family with Three Hares Made 1496 Germany. Albrecht D¸rer used his early large-scale woodcuts to show the unprecedented delicacy of line that he could coax from a solid wooden block. This charming outdoor scene of the Virgin, Joseph, and the Christ Child is brimming with symbolismófrom the Virginís miraculous fertility, as implied by the three playful hares in the lower margin, to the coral necklace around Christís neck, which, in its bloodlike beads, both protected him from the plague and presaged his death on the cross.. In 1505, Cranach became court painter to Friedrich the Wise, Elector of Saxony, who encouraged the production of prints because they promoted the artistic and intellectual vitality of his court and the magnificence of its patronage. The Holy Roman emperor Maximilian did the same, making aristocratic sponsorship of printmaking a critical factor in the rising status of the woodcut. Cranach-together with Albrecht Dürer in Nuremberg and Hans Burgkmair in Augsburg (both on view nearby)-elevated the Northern woodcut to the highest level of artistic expression in the first decade of the 16th century. Friedrich's coat of arms (crossed swords) and the arms of Saxony appear prominently on most of Cranach's prints, suggesting that the artist worked under a kind of retainer-though the arms may also have operated somewhat like a privilege, an exclusive authorization to

The Annunciation to the Shepherds. Karel van Mander, Vinckboons first biographer, praised the artists great versatility as early as 1604. He also commended his skill in wielding the burin and etching needle. Vinckboons, however, was not actually trained as an engraver and probably made prints just for his own pleasure. Impressions of them are rare: only two examples of the Annunciation to the Shepherds are known.

Pluto, god of the Underworld, saw Proserpina, daughter of Ceres, goddess of grain and agriculture, gathering flowers in a field and was seized by love and lust. He captured the young maiden on his chariot and opened a giant chasm in the earth to carry her to the Underworld. Scolari depicts the abduction as a noisy, violent spectacle. The beautiful naked maiden appears in the upper left corner helplessly struggling against the strength of Pluto, while the violent descent of Plutos horses into the flames of Hades takes center stage.
