There German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. A woman, carrying a basket of eggs on her arm, approaches a bird seller with her maid. The maid carries vegetables under her arm on her head. In front of the bird seller there is one more basket with a rooster on the ground, on top of it is a dead duck. The woman wants to buy the birds but they have already been sold to 'a regular customer. This is evident from the caption that forms an interchange between lady and merchant: 'How expensive dees vogel vogelaer hy is vercocht' waer aen een waerdinne clear' die ick vogel tgehe Jaer.'
