At least four teams in the competition were sponsored by KSC, NASA and contractors.  The FIRST  Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions.  FIRST, which is based on "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," redefines winning for these students. In the foreground is the pistol grip tool.  It can install and remove instruments, drive latches and open doors.  A self-contained, high-torque drive, the tool features an on-board computer that permits users to tailor its performance to the mission demands. Teams developed search algorithms for the Swarmies to operate autonomously, communicating and interacting as a collective swarm similar to ants foraging for food. In the spaceport's third annual Swarmathon, 23 teams represented 24 minority serving universities and community colleges were invited to develop software code to operate these innovative robots known as "Swarmies" to help find resources when astronauts explore distant locations, such as the Moon or Mars.

Models of the Orion spacecraft and Launch Abort System are on display for viewing at Naval Base San Diego in California. Service members, base employees and their families will had the opportunity to view a test version of the Orion crew module (in view in the background) before Underway Recovery Test 5 (URT-5). NASA, Orion manufacturer Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Navy will head out to sea with the Orion test vehicle aboard the USS San Diego to demonstrate and evaluate the recovery processes, procedures, hardware and personnel necessary for recovery of Orion on its return from a deep space mission. Orion is the exploration spacecraft designed to carry astronauts to destinations not yet explored by humans, including an asteroid and NASA Journey to Mars. It will have emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during space travel and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. Orion is scheduled to launch atop NASAs Space Launch System rocket in 2018.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space shuttle and rover models built of LEGO bricks are on display at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking a new partnership between the U.S. space agency and The LEGO Group. The three-year Space Act Agreement is meant to spark the interest of children in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with the future release of four NASA-inspired products in the toy company's LEGO CITY line. To commemorate the beginning of the partnership, two small LEGO space shuttles will launch aboard space shuttle Discovery's STS-133 mission to the International Space Station. A 40- by 70-foot activity tent will be set up at Kennedy on Nov. 3 for children of all ages to build their vision of the future with LEGO bricks. LEGO sets also will fly to the space station aboard Endeavour's STS-134 mission, and will be put together on orbit to demonstrate the challenges faced while building things in microgravity.

Project DaVinci is a student-led team at North Idaho STEM Charter Academy. Their spacecraft, the DaVinci satellite, has been constructed with the intent to connect with students worldwide to help reignite a passion for space. When launched, the DaVinci satellite will begin broadcasting messages across the globe using amateur radio uplink and downlink frequencies. Students in nearly every country will be able to receive these messages using a USB receiver dongle, open source software, and a yagi antenna in locations where the signal may be weaker. All messages will be education-related, and messages received will be in Morse Code requiring students to download a translating app or to translate it themselves.
