Medal: Self-portrait model ca. 1566 or 1571 (cast 18th or 19th century) Alfonso Ruspagiari The obverse shows a half-length, frontal self-portraitwith the sitters head turned left and holding a syrinx inhis right hand; the reverse is incused. This very painterlymedal could have been made at the occasion of Ruspagiarisappointment as superintendent of the mint at ReggionellEmilia in 1571. The age of the sitter is about forty-five so the medal may date to about 1566.The composition was basedon a drawing of a female bust attributed to Lelio Orsi(Galleria Estense, Modena), which Ruspagiari couldhave transformed into a self-portrait. By doing so hedeliberately played with his sexual identity, possiblyintending himself to be seen as an uomo universale shapedafter Platos androgyne. Licinius (263-325) was born to a peasant family and was a childhood friend of future emperor Galerius, becoming a close confidante to Galerius and entrusted with the eastern provinces when Galerius went to deal with the usurper Maxentius. Galerius elevated Licinius to co-emperor, Augustus in the West, in 308, though he personally had control over the eastern provinces.

Theodosius I (347-395), also known as Theodosius the Great, was born into a military family in Hispania. He served with his father until his execution in 374, after which Theodosius retired to Hispania until he was given the position of co-emperor by Emperor Gratian after Emperor Valens' death in 378. Theodosius ruled the East Roman Empire, and after Gratian himself was killed in 383, appointed his son Arcadius as his co-ruler in the east while briefly acknowledging the usurper Magnus Maximus before agreeing to a marriage with Emperor Valentinian II's sister Galla and defeating Maximus in battle. He then appointed his trusted general Arbogast to watch and effectively rule over the young Valentinian II in the west, making Theodosius de facto ruler of both West and East. Arbogast eventually killed Valentinian II and placed Eugenius as his puppet emperor in the west in 392, forcing Theodosius to march against him, giving his son Honorius the title of co-emperor in the West instead. Anastasius I (431-518), also known as Anastasius Dicorus, was born into an Illyrian family. After Emperor Zeno's death in 491 CE, many citizens of the empire wanted both a Roman and an Orthodox Christian emperor. In response, Zeno's widow and Emperor Leo I's daughter Ariadne turned to Anastasius, who was in his sixties when he married Ariadne and ascended to the throne. Anastasius soon had to deal with the usurper Longinus, brother of the late Zeno, engaging in the Isaurian War and defeating Longinus in 497. He later fought against the Sassanid Empire in the Anastasian War, the war raging from 502 until 506 when peace was made and the status quo returned to. He also had to contend with invasions by Bulgars and Slavs into the Balkan provinces. Overall, Anastasius' reign was marked for its recognisable accomplishments in terms of bureaucracy and economy. His reforms to taxing, government corruption and new forms of currency resulted in the imperial government being left with a sizable bu

Balbinus (178-238), like his eventual co-emperor Pupienus, was a senator and politican of the Roman Empire. There is little known information about Balbinus before his ascenion to joint emperor, but what is known is that he had served as consul twice, and may have governed multiple provinces. After the Senate recognised the Gordians as co-emperors in 238 in defiance of current Emperor Maximinus Thrax, Balbinus was appointed to a committee alongside Pupienus to try and coordinate operations agaisnt Maximinus until the Gordians could arrive in Rome. The Gordians died less than a month after their ascension however, and the senate become divided in what to do next, with some wishing for Gordian III to become emperor, as the Gordians had been well liked by the people of Rome. Ultimately, Balbinus and Pupienus were declared as co-emperors. This led to riots and civil unrest in the capital, especially with the Praetorian Guard, who despised the idea of Senate-elected emperors. While Pupienus

Marcus Numerius Carus (222-283) was born in Gaul but educated in Rome. A senator, he filled various civil and military posts before eventually being appointed prefect of the Praetorian Guard by Emperor Probus in 282. Either right before or after Probus' assassination, Carus was proclaimed emperor by his soldiers, with Probus' attempts to stop this usurpation leading to his murder by his own soldiers in late 282. Carus avenged the death of Probus by executing his killers, but he was suspected as having been an accessory to the deed. Carus' main achievement during his brief reign was waging a successful campaign against the Sassanid Empire, striking deep into Persian territory and making it all the way to the capital city of Ctesiphon. Carus died in 283 before further conquest could be conducted however, with various reasons attributed to his death, from disease, to a war wound or being struck by lightning during a violent storm.
