Soul in Bondage Elihu Vedder (American, 1836-1923). Soul in Bondage, 1891-1892. Oil on canvas, 37 13/16 x 24 in. (96.1 x 60.9 cm). In this brooding Symbolist subject titled Soul in Bondage, the American expatriate Elihu Vedder brought together his key interests in idealized human form, abstracted design, and the themes of internal spiritual conflict. Profoundly inspired by the writer Edward Fitzgerald's translation of mystical Persian verse in the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (Vedder illustrated a lush 1884 edition), he created numerous subjects representing the individual bound by the dilemma of choice between good and evil symbolized here by the butterfly and the serpent. Behind the figure Vedder employed his signature "double swirl," a motif he had used repeatedly in the Rubáiyát illustrations to suggest the forces that converge and then disperse around the brief point that constitutes an individual human life. The Palace of Aurora 1902 Henri Fantin-Latour French In November 1901, Fantin-Latour wrote: "Never again flowers or portraits. I amuse myself painting whatever comes to mind and, happily, have a dealer who buys whatever I do." The present picture is an example of the imaginative works that the artistfreed from the necessity of painting portraits or commercial still lifesmade at the end of his career. Often based on literary or musical themes, they are distinctive for their loose, spontaneous execution and delicate color harmonies. Here, the goddess of dawn is seated in her cloud-filled palace while Night draws aside her veil, her garments illuminated by the first glittering rays of day.. The Palace of Aurora. Falling Leaves, Allegory of Autumn. Artist: Hugues Merle (French, Saint-Marcellin 1823-1881 Paris). Dimensions: 68 7/8 x 43 1/4 in. (174.9 x 109.9 cm). Date: 1872.Merle, a friend and sometime rival of Bouguereau, was known for the sentimental images of contented rustic families that he regularly exhibited at the annual Salons. In this painting from 1872, Merle tried his hand at a loosely mythological scene of a languid young woman in the guise of Fall. Catharine Lorillard Wolfe bought the melancholic picture from the New York branch of the art gallery Goupil & Co. on February 21, 1873, while still in mourning for her father. A critic who saw the work in Wolfe's home remarked, "Here, under russet foliage, a ripe beauty passes.... Nearby, disguised so much in shadow as to be almost invisible, little Love is running away; for this bereavement of affection is the plague of life's Autumn, as love's importunity is the plague of its Spring.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The 1917 caption reads: Bending down a branch of the Laburnum tree- Queen of the May - Story - Simple Susan. Simple Susan was written by Maria Edgeworth (died 1849), a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe, and Louey Chisholm, a prolific childrens book writer. The bright yellow flowers hang in pendulous racemes up to 25 cm (10 inches) in length and produce pods that are slender and compressed. All parts of laburnums are poisonous, especially the seeds, and occasionally the plants have proved fatal to cattle, though hares and rabbits are unharmed.
