Date: ca. 1884.During the summer of 1884 Twachtman--then a student at the Académie Julian in Paris--rented a chteau with his family at Arques-la-Bataille, Normandy, near the port of Dieppe, and focused on painting unpretentious views of the Arques River valley. In this work, he portrayed the edge of the Béthune, a tributary of the Arques, bordered by a fringe of reeds and meadow flowers. In his Paris studio the following winter, he reconsidered the naturalistic sketch and created his monumental canvas "Arques-la-Bataille" (68.52). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Meadow with Cows by the Water. A vast polder, cows in the meadow and - in the background - a windmill: these have been the hallmarks of the Dutch countryside since the 17th century. Such landscapes with cows near a ditch were Willem Maris speciality. He especially lavished attention on the atmosphere; and, indeed, the warmth of a summer day is almost palpable in this painting.

Date: 1896.Henri-Edmond Cross was a practitioner of the Neoimpressionist style of painting, a short-lived avantgarde movement in the late nineteenth century which emphasized the use of separate touches of interwoven pigment to achieve greater vibrancy of color in the observer's eye. In Pines Along the Shore, painted in the south of France overlooking the Mediterranean, Cross weaves and layers separate brushstrokes, building his paint surface in a tapestry-like fashion from cool tones on the pine grove floor to brilliant foliage at the water's edge to softer hues in the sky and mountains beyond.
